Chapter 11, Problem 19P

The Calhoun Textile Mill is in the process of deciding on a production schedule. It wishes to know how to weave the various fabrics it will produce during the coming quarter. The sales department has continued orders for each of the 15 fabrics produced by Calhoun. These demands are given in the following table. Also given in this table is the variable cost for each fabric. The mill operates continuously during the quarter: 13 weeks, 7 days a week, and 24 hours a day.

There are two types of looms: dobbie and regular. Dobbie looms can be used to make all fabrics and are the only looms that can weave certain fabrics, such as plaids. The rate of production for each fabric on each type of loom is also given in the table. Note that if the production rate is zero, the fabric cannot be woven on that type of loom. Also, if a fabric can be woven on each type of loom, then the production rates are equal. Calhoun has 90 regular looms and 15 dobbie looms. For this problem, assume that the time requirement to change over a loom from one fabric to another is negligible.

Management would like to know how to allocate the looms to the fabrics and which fabrics to buy on the market so as to minimize the cost of meeting demand.

The Lawson Fabric Mill Produces five different fabrics. Each fabric can be woven on one or more of the mill’s 36 looms. The sales department’s forecast of demand for the next month is shown in below Table 1, along with data on the selling price per yard, variable cost per yard, and purchase price per yard. The mill operates 24 hours a day and is scheduled for 30 days during the coming month. The mill has two types of looms: draw and regular. The draw looms are more versatile and can be used for all five fabrics. The regular looms can produce only three of the fabrics. The mill has a total of 36 looms: 8 are draw and 28 are regular. The rate of production for each fabric on each type of loom is given in below Table 2. The time required to change over from producing one fabric to another is negligible and does not have to be considered.   The Lawson Fabric Mill satisfies all demand with either its own fabric or fabric purchased from another mill. Fabrics that cannot be woven at the…
A furniture store expects to sell 120 coffee tables during the next year. It costs $1.50 to store one coffee table for one year. To reorder, there is a fixed cost of $10, plus $2.80 for each coffee table ordered. In what lot size and how many times per year should an order be placed to minimize inventory costs? coffee tables per order orders per year
A contractor, Susan Meyer, has to haul gravel to three building sites. She can purchase as much as 18 tons at a gravel pit in the north of the city and 14 tons at one in the south. She needs 10, 5, and 10 tons at sites 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The purchase price per ton at each gravel pit and the hauling cost per ton are given in the table below. Susan wishes to determine how much to haul from each pit to each site to minimize the total cost for purchasing and hauling gravel. Hauling Cost per Ton at Site Pit 1 3 Price per Ton North $30 $60 $50 $100 South $60 $30 $40 $120 Now suppose that trucks (and their drivers) need to be hired to do the hauling, where each truck can only be used to haul gravel from a single pit to a single site. Each truck can haul 5 tons, and the cost per truck is five times the hauling cost per ton given above. Only full trucks would be used to supply each site. a. Formulate this problem as an assignment problem by constructing the appropriate cost table,…
