Chapter 1, Problem 1RQ
Is the north magnetic pole of the earth a north polarity or a south polarity?
Expert Solution & Answer
To determine
Whether the north magnetic pole of earth is of north polarity or south polarity.
Explanation of Solution
The phenomenon of interchanging of the magnetic north pole and magnetic south pole is termed as geomagnetic reversal. These reversal occurrences are statically random in nature. The Earth is surrounded entirely by magnetic lines of forces. It can also be said that it is surrounded by a magnetic shell. Due of the fact, that unlike magnetic poles attract each other, the south magnetic pole of the Earth attracts the north magnetic pole of the compass needle.
Thus, the north magnetic pole of earth is actually of south polarity.

A Generator Bike. You and your team are designing a generator using a stationary bike to rotate a coil in a uniform magnetic field. The
gearing is set up so that the coil rotates 60 times for one complete rotation of the bike pedals. Therefore, one revolution of the pedals
per second results in a 60-Hz alternating current in the coil. The circular coil has 380 turns and a diameter of 18.0 cm, and its axis of
rotation is along its diameter.
(a) Ifa uniform magnetic field is oriented perpendicular to the coil's axis of rotation and has a magnitude of 8-0.210 T, what is the
peak emf produced by the generator bike?
(b) What is the rms emf?
(c) To what magnitude should you reduce the field if you want the rms emf to be 110 VAC?
(d) Instead of reducing the field, you could use a step-down transformer to reduce the rms emf to 110 VAC. What should be the ratio of
primary to secondary turns of the transformer coils?
