The stability of the Alpha helix is affected by the electrostatic repulsion between amino acid residues with charged R groups, the bulkiness of adjacent R groups, the interaction between amino acid side change spaced three or 4 residues apart and the occurrence of proline residues. Finally the interaction between amino acids at the ends of the helix and the electric dipole inherent to this structure also contributes to the stability of an Alpha helix.
