LAB NOTES - FRIEDEL-CRAFTS ALKYLATION
The laboratory manual procedure was followed using the following quants:
Alkyl chloride, student prepared, from fall semester, 15.7549gram
1,4-dimethoxybenzene, 5.0035gram
Anhydrous aluminum chloride used: all that was issued
The crude product obtained was a solid orange mass. This crude product was treated as per procedure in the manual to ultimately afford 2.7834gram of dry snow white solid.
Subsequently, a small amount of the snow white solid was used to measure a melting point of: 101 deg C (SHARP).
Enough of the snow white solid was dissolved in about 1ml of chloroform-d to prepare a very concentrated solution, to which a few drops of TMS were added. Using the Anasazi 60MHz NMR on the Cumberland Campus, proton, C-13 and DEPT NMR spectra were obtained.
The two possible alkyl chlorides are tert-butyl or tert-amyl chlorides
