The sale of cigarettes should be made illegal in Australia. This statement is made because of the dangerous and repugnant consequences in which follow the investment of cigarettes. Consequences which after use, can vary from losing hundreds of dollars each month, to suffering from minor issues such as bad breath, to obtaining a majorly severe illness such as heart disease or even cancer. The importance of being able to prevent these possible outcomes needs to be recognised, as it does affect many individuals daily, and to a great extent. Every year, 15,000 Australians die due to illnesses from long term smoking. Is this really acceptable within our nation?

By presenting a scenario, I will attempt to explain the financial as well as physical distress an everyday smoker may face. If an individual purchases a $16 packet of 25 cigarettes twice a week, smoking 10 cigarettes per day for a total of 3 years, this smoker would have lost nearly 70 thousand dollars and obtained 180 grams of tar in their lungs. 70 thousand dollars is enough money to invest in a car, to pay off bills and debt or to generally support a family or their own individual self in a decent approach. Although most of the tar would have been removed from the lungs via coughing, the remains are absorbed into the lungs, causing vital lung cells to die off. The tar also harms by paralysing or even eradicating the cilia, which are the microscopic hairs located on the inner lining of the airways, intended to prevent infection. Without these acquiring their full potential, individuals will find it easier to obtain infections to the lungs and
