What Does Independence Mean Strength?

Apparently according to modern culture, independence means strength. People demand heroines in books and movies who need no man to save them, and cute quotes on social media tell us to believe in ourselves and slay our own dragons. Instead of assuming having friends and community vital for one's well-being, people seem to assume that they have those things only for when they feel lonely or want to have fun. However if one delves deeper into understanding relationships, it may become clear that, as George Bernard Shaw states, “we are all dependent on one another, every soul of us on earth.” While for maturity one needs self-reliance, people still need community and fellowship in order to grow.
People do need a certain degree of independence. Teachings in the Bible imply maturity and personal responsibility for Christians. They cannot go around their whole lives waiting on others to serve them and take in their responsibility. For …show more content…

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 proclaims that “two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift his companion up.” People think that strength means self-sufficiency and no need for others, whereas this verse implies the opposite. Indeed, the verse continues, “but woe to him who is alone who falls, for he has no one to help him up.” Even the strongest of people fall, and if they have denied their need for companionship beforehand, they will find no help. Also the author of Hebrews warns against “forsaking the assembling of ourselves together,” and many of the epistles exhort fellowship “in order to stir up love and good works.” Truly, love cannot abound in isolation, and Paul states that the greatest thing is love (1 Corinthians 13:13). Proverbs informs us that “a man who isolates himself seeks his own desire” (Proverbs 18:1), implying that the person who seeks complete independence shows no love to
