Independent and dependent both have their good and bad reasons in Ayn Rand's novel “Anthem” Equality 7-2521 experiences both of these. Equality 7-2521 starts out in this novel as everyone else in his society dependent on each of their brothers on every decision. He then slowly starts to become independent towards the end of the novel. Well Equality was still depending on his brothers he was disobeying the law by working by himself. He had discovered electricity and he then invented the “glass box that was able to hold light,he soon after wanted to show his new invention thinking that it would be life changing to the house of scholars but they rejected him causing him to become completely independent and not rely on any of his brothers. Equality 7-2521 was not like any of his other brothers he was different and being different in his society is a bad thing he was over six feet in height and was smarter then most of the other students in his school. To them if you are smarter that is against the law because if you think you know something that man doesn't already know then it doesn't exist. So for this equality was lashed(another word for being …show more content…
Equality went to the house and showed the scholars before him and spoke of his invention, the scholars rejected his invention saying that it would not be of any help it would only cause harm. They said it would make no need for the candle factory. They said that they can not let this invention created by one person change the world.after hearing this he decided to leave to the “the uncharted forest” so that way no one could tell him what he could and could not do. He went to the forest with the golden one that was by his side after he invented the glass box.he then learned that there was no “we” there was “I” they didn't have to use “we” to represent themselves
Although Equality and his leaders have developed different experiences and knowledge, he can’t judge his society for having a different perspective than him. Instead he should respect their point of view and move on in life. Even though the Scholars didn’t respect his new discovery of the light bulb, it doesn’t mean that
Equality contemplates, “I wonder, for it is hard for me to conceive how men who knew the word “I”, could give it up and not know what they lost” (103). This quote narrates the discovery of one of the most essential words used to identify as a single, original person, I. Equality realizes the tragedy of the loss that his previous society created before his lifetime and really ponders why and how this could happen in a very separate world. Equality readies himself to be an individual person as a result of feeling strongly against the beliefs of his previous society. Equality excitedly states, “We made a fire, we cooked the bird, and we ate it, and no meal had ever tasted better to us. And we thought suddenly that there was a great satisfaction to be found in the food which we need and obtain by our own hand” (79). In the past, Equality had never done anything to express his originality because of the law stating otherwise, so when given the opportunity to finally understand his own strengths and weaknesses, he takes it. He disregards the law and excitedly grasps the concept that he isn’t supposed to be a follower like his peers were, he was meant to be a leader. Disagreeing with the law was a main point of Rand’s novella, promoting personal
He was thought that it was bad to be different but he did not care, he just wanted to show other citizens that there was more than what meets the eyes. Not only is equality an individualized thinker but he is also smart and brave. Equality makes a statement in his society by creating light and sharing the new invention with others. “We MADE IT. WE CREATED IT. We brought it forth from the night of the ages. We alone. Our hands. Our minds. Ours alone and only. We knew not what we are saying. Our head is reeling. We look upon the light which we have made” ( Rand 59). This shows that Equality made a new invention and is eventually going to show it to the council of scholars. This affects society because the council of scholars thinks that Equality is being superior to his brother. “We have much to say to a wretch who have broken all the laws and who boast of their infamy! How dared you think that your mind held greater wisdom than the minds of your brothers? And if the council had decreed that you should be a street sweeper, how dared you think that you could be of greater use to men than in sweeping the streets?” (Rand 71). This proves that no one, besides Equality wants to change society. This ties to the theme by trying to break out of the controlling society and leading into Equality standing up for individualism and for himself. In addition this concludes how the two short stories “Anthem” and “Harrison Bergeron” have different themes.
All his life he had been told that it “is a great sin, to be born with a head which is too quick. It is not good to be different from our brothers, but it is evil to be superior to them” (21). The Teachers made Equality believe that everything he did was wrong, and because they were appointed by the Councils, he believed them to be correct. The appointing of all things by the Councils relates to the Supreme Court. This situation relates to the moral sin in society. Everything is controlled. When Equality turned fifteen, the Council of Vocations appointed him the job of a “Street Sweeper”; it pleased him. This happiness did not last because he was unsatisfied. He always craved more, and one day, a gift was given. Equality 7-2521, with fellow Street Sweeper International 4-8818, uncovered an underground tunnel that was used for subways during the Unmentionable Times, which gave Equality hope. This underground tunnel became everything to Equality because it gave him peace, and it became the one of the many reasons why he was able to break free from being controlled by the leaders of his time of the Great
To start off, Equality7-2521 is self-centered and is probably the most self-centered character in this book. This trait that he possesses sets him apart from mostly everyone in his society. From a very young age he recognized that he was different and he knew that unlike the others he wanted to learn and wanted his questions to be answered. He broke his very first rule at a young age. This rule was not to wish for a certain career because the council of vocations knows where you are needed amongst your brothers and sisters. (Chapter 1 page 22)
People commonly blame their hardships in life on the environment in which they grew up in. They put the blame on their family, culture, race, and the society they were surrounded by to justify anything negative that goes on within their life. This has turned out to be a common view of man and an excuse that many people are known to use when they continue to keep themselves in the same situation. People will claim that it is not their fault because they did not have any control over the external factors that they faced, so they let that have control over their life instead of fighting it. In the book “Anthem” by Ayn Rand the main character Equality 7-2521 lives in a society where every part of the people’s life is being controlled. “It is a
Equality 7-2521 changes throughout the novel because of the harsh society he lives in and because of the philosophy of collectivinessive. They were all raised from birth to believe in living for their brothers as a whole and only doing things for their brothers instead of themselves. “We strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike” (Rand 19). After he was assigned the job of street sweeping, and believing he deserved more he started to break the rules. Equality knew there were things not being told to them and they wanted to know more than what was being offered to him. The start of breaking the rules is what started the change of the character. His internal knowledge that he was blessed and born with led him to the invention
In this book called Anthem by Ayn Rand this boy named Equality 7-2521 is supposed to follow rules and regulations set up by these people who run his society. The leaders have convinced the people that all these decisions that they make are what’s best for the people and the community.
Equality slowly becomes his own person and therefor gradually starts to break the laws. In the very beginning he know his breaking he law but does not stop “It is a sin to write this… it is base and evil”(Rand 17) shows he is no a slave to the government and has his own mind. He wasn’t told to do this and came up with it his self, shows uniqueness and independency.
Equality 7-2521 used to think he had to do everything for his brothers until he started getting better ideas about life.
He lives in the dark ages of the future. All knowledge and civilization of the past are gone. In this case, Equality built the current that goes through a lightbulb. In the view of the council, that was unacceptable."What is not thought by all men cannot be true." page 73. Meanwhile, the community doesn’t even know the word "I". When Equality was little he would fight with the other students and get locked in the cellar.
Instead they force him into a position where he has no influence. If Equality had been placed where he had the most compatibility he’d have been a scholar. However in doing so his genius would have caused many breakthroughs and the structure of society would begin to crumble. Thus Equality is
Equality was starting to think words no others thought which was said to be wrong. He continued to learn more and think more because it felt right and it’s what he wanted to do it made him happy. Along the way of his journey he cared less and less about what others were thinking about him. Many other people joined him because they believed in what he was doing. This shows that if you live everyday worried about what others think you will not be satisfied.
Compared to every one else, he was at six feet tall you and can just tell by reading that equality had to which a charm that put him in an advantage towards the other civilians of the society. Which again breaks the whole idea of equality towards all men. The council could not allow such a person to become a scholar. They were sure that he was optimistic and his mind set was on a scale much above everyone else. So the council decides to place him as a street sweeper and lower his confidence and
Equality knew he was different from everyone else. From the day he was born he knew something was wrong. Not necessarily wrong with him - he knew that there was something different about him. He knew the inventions he made would be against the job that he was assigned, but he believed
