A focus on differences in Western and Confucian value may have variations in values within cultures and the changes of Chinese American women. This essay compared Xuxi’s novel That man in our lives and Typical American by Gish Jen. Take a closer look to observe the variation in Confucian value among Chinese American woman. How they challenge to their Confucian values after they received American consumer culture. When the Industrial Revolution made mass consumption possible in the US, consumerism was an effective political choice to sustain a healthy, balanced economy. Consumer culture is defined as buying and spending of consumer and is closely link to money (Zhang, 2014)

I am going to mainly focus about Helen and Theresa, which are the characters in Typical American and picked up some similarities with Chinese American women Anita woo which is the character in That man in our lives. What I want to see is how the books described the variation in Confucian value among those women. Nevertheless, I noticed that there was one of the reasons cause the variation. All of this three characters influenced by the American consumer culture. American consumer culture was one of the reason made Helen and Theresa doubted their Confucian value and shifted to western value. Firstly, the women change from obedient to independent self-determined women. Helen and Theresa were influenced by Chinese Confucianism from their family at first. Both of them followed the regulation of Confucianism for women to obey. For instance, “Three obedience and four virtues”. They were taught to obey their father as a daughter before getting married; they should obey their husband after marriage, and then obey their son after their husband
