What people wear is very important because it does only effect a person at an personal level, but it also has a strong impact on the surrounding individuals or the society at large. Even with such knowledge, there has been increased debate about whether wearing of uniforms only add up to authoritarianism at school and makes the learners feel dictated upon (Yeneyama 124) or it is useful and should be upheld. What learners and those opposed to uniforms probably do not know is that, school uniform increases discipline, heightens levels of learning and conforms the student to the school rules, which then improves performance. Again, school uniform acts as a means through which young people can be protected from gangs especially because some gang attires can easily be infused into the common dressing trends leading to insecurity of the learner (NBC News.com n.p). In this discussion, the study looks into some of the articles that have been written over this subject and through these information, an understanding as to why school uniforms are important is thus unveiled. School uniforms help create a disciplined atmosphere that is necessary for success in academics (Brookshire 01, 02). Brookshire states that in this study it was realized that, “schools implemented uniforms in an attempt to reduce clothing costs for parents and to help curb social pressures.” (Brookshire 01) Meaning that, school uniforms bring forth more than just one advantage. As the uniforms help
As the years pass, many students have been bullied, a bully, or they just hate school and this was affecting their lives academically. School boards tried to find a way to improve the way students feel about themselves and about school, and they came up with the idea of school uniforms. School uniforms have been associated with just the Catholic school, but are now showing up in public schools across the country. According to the National Center for Education Statistics: Indicators of School Crime and Safety, 2011, twenty-one states require students to wear uniforms in the public school system (Pros and Cons of School Uniforms Statistics). This has seemed to work tremendously in the school system. In education, school uniforms assist with student success, academically, socially, and personally.
Draa (2006) stated that "uniforms can be beneficial by blurring class lines within a student body (para. 13). Uniforms can also benefit these students ' self-esteem as they won 't have to feel self-conscience about wearing old or worn out clothes. Not only would uniforms reduce students standing out because of their parent 's financial status, they have also been proven to be cheaper over time. Uniforms are more cost-effective because parents would only have to buy several days ' worth of the same items of clothing, rather than buying lots of clothes for different outfits every day. School uniforms also reduce competition among students to dress better than the other students and instead allows them to focus more on their studies.
Thirdly, uniforms enforce discipline towards learning and enhance education. Students have to wear a particular set of clothes throughout their high school careers. This results in building up of self-discipline for each student, which is beneficial to the long-term process of learning. For example, students’ attention is not diverted towards the latest designs and hence, can spend more time concentrating on academic goals. Uniforms improve a person’s attitude towards success too. Students generally act the way they are dressed and with fewer distractions, they are able to focus on their goals and obtain better results. Hence, uniforms result in better learning at high schools for students through the development of self-discipline and positive point of view towards success.
Most often school uniforms are used at private and religious schools. However uniforms are getting incorporated into US public schools in increasing numbers. One in five US public schools required students to wear uniforms during the school year of 2013 through 2014, up from one in eight in 2003-2004.In favor of school uniforms , the reasons that follow establish the positive effects that the uniforms have for schools, decrease the bullying rates, provides solutions to high-poverty schools, creates a spiritual and prideful environment for schools. Mandatory uniform policies in public schools are found more commonly in high-poverty areas.
Uniforms have a been a huge demand in the United States for the past decades. Implementing uniforms will minimize distractions among the students, lessen social trends, improve academic performance and diminish bullying. Most importantly uniforms lower gang affiliations and parents can reduce their financial burden. “Uniforms are a daily reminder that school is first and foremost a hallowed house of learning” (Warren 2011, pg. 25). Mandating school uniforms enriches students’ performance academically and psychologically.
School uniforms are starting to be enforced more and more in schools as time goes on. Uniforms might limit self expression in their clothes but it does not limit their learning which is the whole purpose of going to school after all. School uniforms in both private and public schools can be beneficial to students in regards of their social and academic skills. School uniforms can help prevent bullying and will make it easier on some students and parents as well. This debate whether school uniforms should be enforced or not has been a debate that has been going on for years and having uniforms has more of a positive impact than a negative
Uniforms help to create unity and diversity by encouraging values of tolerance and respect. Uniforms allow kids and adolescents to grow in a surrounding where everyone is equal since elementary. Uniforms make students to focus more on learning and less on socioeconomic status (“Junior Scholastic”).We live in an era where most adolescents are worried about the “good looking” and they are less worried about their academic achievements, with uniforms this serious problem can be reduced in a great percent, for example, In 1994, Long Beach became the first U.S public school district to require school uniforms. Their results have been astounding, they saw 51-percent drop in fights, 50 percent drop in weapons and a 32-percent drop on suspensions (“Junior Scholastic”). The drastic changes in this campus have been advantageous for the understanding of the use of uniforms in schools.
A way that school uniforms create good learning environments is by not having to worry about what they wear on a daily basis. Healthguidance.org states that it’s true that children at school that are in uniform will feel like putting in more work than if they weren’t to have uniforms, that they would take their education as a joke. Studies show that a slight improvement in the grades of students who wear uniforms happens. Without uniforms, students are often focused on what they
A study has been done by two Notre Dame University professors, they looked at how uniforms affected “attendance, disciplinary behavior problems, substance abuse, and academic achievement.” From the study the teachers’ outlook of their students with uniforms on changed immensely, they saw them as acting more responsibly, intelligent, and more prosperous. This opinion is false, the students had the same intelligence level as before and based on the results of the study the uniforms did not show a decline in absence, drug use, attitudes toward school, or achievement in the classroom. The study found that tenth graders’ success levels were adversely affected by being compelled to wear uniforms. This shows that there are negative effects of wearing school uniforms.
In many schools around the United States, multiple females are told that their choice of clothing is inappropriate and distracting to the male students. In some cases, girls admit that being told to change or being sent home sometimes lowers their self esteem, especially when the boys are also breaking dress code but are not getting in trouble for it. Girls are told that a boy’s education is more important than their own. Even though most young men will admit they are not distracted by the clothing girls wear, the excuse, “boys will be boys” is used to disregard their behavior and are not punished for their actions. Young women are being sexuallized for the clothing they wear and are being told they need to cover up for the sake of their safety, instead of teaching young men to control themselves.
I was 7 years old when I first started wearing a uniforms at my school in Meridian , India. My morning routine was quite simple. It started off with me putting on my navy blue skirt , white button down blouse and a dark blue tie. I’d run I ran down the stairs to put on my jet black shoes with white socks as my mom braided my hair. Then we'd have a leisurely breakfast where she'd make me my favorite chocolate chips pancakes and I would head to school. At school,I would to see my friends and classmates wearing the exact same white button down shirt paired with a navy blue skirt and a navy blue tie , and black shoes; We all looked the same. Nobody made fun of each other, we didn’t compare ourselves and no one picked on someone else because of their appearance. I didn't care what I was wearing or how I looked as all my friends would also be wearing the same clothes as I did.
Firstly I will be talking about how school uniform creates a sense of unity and equality between students. We all start school at a very tender age. All our lives start in school because school isn’t just for education but it evolves our lives and emotions; and teaches us the importance of friendship. And wearing a school uniform gives
A student gets pushed into a locker, the instigator takes the child’s shirt and pulls it. “Where did you get this shirt from, five below?” The other people surrounding the child laugh. Now that same child runs home to his mother crying in tears. The child proceeds to tell him about his day whimpering word after word. A mother struggling to pay for the house now feels obligated to buy her child more expensive clothes just because they were picked on. Well if students had a uniform the instigator would not be able to pick on anything because they are wearing the same clothes. Roughly twenty-nine percent of the United States population are lower class according to the graph in Marilyn Geewax article, The Tipping Point: Most Americans No Longer Are Middle Class. Many schools give children the privilege to wear what they want to school, although is this a bad idea? Children are picked on for there attire, others getting dress coded for explicit clothing, but the problems are redundant had the schools enforce a rule about uniforms. One may argue that with a uniform does not give the student the privilege to express oneself. Although that's not true. Many students who do have dress
The decision for school district to enforce school uniforms has been in existence since the 16th century. School uniforms were originally created for poor children; however, over time, schools saw uniforms as a way to bring students together. There has been debate whether uniforms improve academic success while reducing affiliation of violence. There is opinion and study that indicate no correlation between school uniforms and academic achievement; however, there were come correlation between school uniforms and student behavior. Among many concerns is the cost of uniforms, especially for a multiple child household.
Uniforms also make students to prepare to dress like a professional. Students who “learn to dress appropriately in school also can do so in a professional setting, such as offices” (Prill et al). Uniforms help students to learn how to dress appropriate clothes. Since they are wearing uniforms, they will get the ideas on how the professional places want to dress. Uniform decreases the student’s behavior problem such as attendance rates and suspension rates (Brunsma and Rockquemore). Uniforms instill discipline help students focus on their studies and eliminate pressure on parents to outfit their kids (Kelly). Academic performances
