Many people have different passions, some might share the same ones while others might have some that no one has heard of before. Mine would have to be anything that had to do with working with kids. I love teaching them, babysitting them, and even playing with them, it's a new and different experience every time. I find it amazing that you could learn more than you think from someone who is 10+ years younger than you. They can teach you the smallest things that you never realized they could. For example how they treat everyday like a new one, they don't focus on the past events from the previous day they always have a fresh look on things; which can be hard to do as you grow older. Social work is a career that I have always been interested in, especially working with children and families. Helping people overcome obstacles and making the most of themselves is a very rewarding and yet a challenging career. I’ll have the chance to meet a variety of different people with different problems from cases of abuse and neglect as well as supporting those in the care system. I have over 20 years with working children from at-risk adolescents, group homes, teacher assisted, and driving a school bus. Some of the principles of building relationships with children, young people and adults are to be caring, understanding, respectful and accepting of other people for who they are. Building relationships with children needs extra attention as they can be very impressionable and the way we behave with them could affect the way they behave towards others, so being a good role model is very important. Setting agreed limits and boundaries with children will mean they learn what acceptable behaviour is and what is not and will help them to take responsibility for their own behaviour, in a school setting this could mean having a written agreement. Likewise with young people and adults you need to have agreed levels of acceptable behaviour when building relationships. Having respect for other people’s opinions and views and allowing others to express themselves even though we may disagree is also very important, as is letting children have their say. Treating others the way we would like to be treated ourselves and encouraging children and young people to do the same is an important lesson in relationship building as is being able to express our emotions and feelings openly but in an appropriate way. Encouraging children and young people to recognise and deal with emotions and feelings in a positive way will help build better relationships with adults as well as with each other. Recently I read an article in the San Diego Union Tribune entitled "Setting Up Foster Kids for Success" by Assemblyman Brian Maienschein. The article focused on helping foster kids succeed. The article points to statistics that show around half of foster kids who stay in the system until they age out wind up in dire straights - homeless, in prison, or victimized in some way. Some even wind up dead.

My passion is to not only teach students in a creative and positive way that they are actually learning but also to inspire them to learn and make something great of themselves in their future. The reason being when I was younger I did not take my education that serious. If I would have known then how serious an education was, I feel that I could have accomplished more in middle and high school. After school I wouldn't care about actually learning about my homework. For this reason I want to inspire kids to want to learn at a young age and for them to see that their education and work ethic is very important even at their age. Most importantly I want my future students to want to learn.
