The military classics of China represent a long and historical culture of the Chinese people. They represent the societal concerns and developments of China and within these texts are recurring tenets that occupied the philosophy of China. Five tenets will be analyzed to show the Confucian relationship across various military texts. The philosophy of Confucianism permeates throughout the Chinese history and society beginning with Han Wudi’s reign. Confucian influence found within the texts of the military doctrine. Confucianism can be found once more in this strategy as the goal was to kill as few people as possible, since the goal of warfare wasn’t to kill people. Sun-tzu favored a primary objective of subjugating other states without fighting thus diplomatic coercion was the idea method. He stressed avoiding prolonged warfare. He wrote, “Thus the army values being victorious; it does not value prolonged warfare.” This meant maximizing the results with minimum destruction that is inflicted. The writers like Wei Liao-tzu focused on speed, deception, concentration of force, assaulting weak points while avoiding strengths as strategic ways of forcing the opponent to acquiesce. Brute force warfare was disdain for a maneuver that provided a quick end to a conflict thus achieving the desired goals without excess killing.
Confucian ideals permeate through the military texts and the five tenets analyzed as examples of the relationship between the military texts and Confucianism. The writers of these texts were bound culturally to the Confucian ideals as they wrote the texts. This relationship emphasized peace more than pacifism. during the Zhou Dynasty, China was experiencing a great deal of political turmoil. A major part of this era was called the Period of the Warring States. It was a time when there were numerous wars that occurred due to the conflict that existed between seven states. (Watkins, 2013) These warring states were the Han, Wu, Zhao, Chu, Qi, Yan and Jin. According to Jerry H. Bentley and Herbert F. Ziegler of the book Traditions and Encounters, “This period forced some people to reflect on the nature of society, and the roles of humans beings within society.” The authors continued saying that it forced others to “identify principles that would restore political and social order.” (Bentley & Ziegler, 2011) The principles of Confucianism were established and followed in order to help the citizens of China to live and govern their communities more efficiently. Through Confucianism, Confucius helped legitimize China’s rule and bring about order in the mist of turmoil. The effects of Confucius’ principles are still seen and felt today in many aspects of modern day Chinese society. Veritably, there were points throughout Chinese history where Confucianism affected almost every aspect of life in China. Confucius has impacted the development of Chinese thought and culture in various ways from education to politics, to familial relationships.
Complied during the Warring States Period, the Daodejing is widely known as one of China’s famous philosophy literature. This text reflects the general lament of a civilization that has been worn down from war and seeks to find peace by teaching people how to live by “the Way”. When Western people think of Confucianism, they often think of it in a past sense- as something only relevant to ancient China that cannot be applied to modern day society. However, what these people fail to realize is that Confucianism’s roots have been so integrated into China’s society that the values have become a part of every day life. Without having to explicitly state that they are following specifics aspects of Confucianism, most Chinese people submit to them, often times unknowingly. However, Confucian values not only exist in the Chinese society, but also permeate into other areas of Chinese culture such as architecture and aspects of Feng-Shui.
Confucius was born in an impoverished family. Throughout his childhood he was very eager to learn so his mother fostered that. He had several small positions in government in his home state, Lu. He was the first ever teacher/educationalist in the history of China. His teachings found in the Analects, discusses ethical modules family, politics, economy, and more. When looking at the ideas of Confucianism, one must look at the values that he expresses that are essential to human beings in order to become gentleman. Some of these values are present in every society and in every country. Ideas like jen and the Golden Rule are indispensable to life in almost every society on the globe.
The chapter also extends on to Confucius learning among the populace and its usage by the government, Confucian learning and its relevance to China’s modernization program, and connections between Confucian teachings and democracy. Essentially, the author’s purpose for chapter 1 is to establish an understanding on the importance of Confucian learning undergoing transformations and adapted to modern times.
