The military classics of China represent a long and historical culture of the Chinese people. They represent the societal concerns and developments of China and within these texts are recurring tenets that occupied the philosophy of China. Five tenets will be analyzed to show the Confucian relationship across various military texts. The philosophy of Confucianism permeates throughout the Chinese history and society beginning with Han Wudi’s reign. Confucian influence found within the texts of the military doctrine. Confucianism can be found once more in this strategy as the goal was to kill as few people as possible, since the goal of warfare wasn’t to kill people. Sun-tzu favored a primary objective of subjugating other states without fighting thus diplomatic coercion was the idea method. He stressed avoiding prolonged warfare. He wrote, “Thus the army values being victorious; it does not value prolonged warfare.” This meant maximizing the results with minimum destruction that is inflicted. The writers like Wei Liao-tzu focused on speed, deception, concentration of force, assaulting weak points while avoiding strengths as strategic ways of forcing the opponent to acquiesce. Brute force warfare was disdain for a maneuver that provided a quick end to a conflict thus achieving the desired goals without excess killing.
Confucian ideals permeate through the military texts and the five tenets analyzed as examples of the relationship between the military texts and Confucianism. The writers of these texts were bound culturally to the Confucian ideals as they wrote the texts. This relationship emphasized peace more than pacifism.
