Taoism Is Not The True Tao

What is Taoism? Answering that question turned out to be much harder than I thought, is it a religion, a philosophy or a way of life? The more I researched, the deeper I got into it and the deeper I got in to it, the more it made my head spin. Taoism is described as being, indescribable, undefinable, and nameless, in the words of the great sage Laozi “That which can be named is not the true Tao”. The translation for Tao is “the way”, it is the origin of everything, and it is heaven, earth and humanity existing beyond all forms. The main underlying principle of Taoism is to conform to the underlying pattern of the universe, the Tao. These revelations were made into a fundamental text, titled “Tao Te Ching”, meaning the book of the way. Legend has it that Laozi sat down and wrote the Tao Te Ching in one sitting, before entrusting it to Zhang Daoling. Like other philosophies, Taoism gives its followers an alternate set of values than is normally followed. The value system for Taoism was based upon Laozi’s three treasures, these are 1. Benevolence 2. Frugality and 3. Never trying to be number one. Laozi reflected these in chapters 67 and 69 of the Tao Te Ching. In chapter 67 he states “I hold and protect three treasures: Benevolence, frugality and never trying to be number one”, and in chapter 69 “There is no greater disaster than to underestimate your enemy. If I did that, I would lose my 3 treasures. In combat, the most reticent side will win.” My view on this is that fame, wealth and power are costly to the individuals’ health, their humanity and it is difficult for one to keep. Taoism consists of two separate streams, 1.a school of philosophical thought that originated in the Zhou Dynasty out of the intellectual ferment, in which many philosophical schools were competing to advise rulers on the correct way to live and govern. 2. A system of religious belief that arose in the Han Dynasty, 500 years after the philosophical stream. The philosophical system of Taoism stems largely from the Tao Te Ching.
