Strengths And Weaknesses Of Online Learning

E-learning has contributed into a technology-driven paradigm that has transformed the educational processes by providing creativity, innovation and diverse styles in teaching and learning. In nutshell, it is transferring of knowledge and information to learners using Information and Communication Technologies. E-learning is delivery of contents using extensive technological tools and computers with an intention to provide autonomy and flexibility to learners as well as teachers. The term E-learning is interchangeably used with related terms like virtual learning, online learning, web-based learning, internet learning, distributed learning, networked learning, tele-learning, computer-assisted learning, web-based learning and the likes. However, broadly e-learning refers to delivery of learning objects using electronic technologies.

Blended learning is a combination of multiple approaches for teaching. It is where a mix of different learning methods that together in learning and teaching (Garrison & Vaughan, 2008). The methods are the traditional learning method and online learning. Traditional learning is face to face teaching. This type of method is where the students will listen to the instructor through visual, whiteboard, case studies and etc. It is an immediate interaction as the students have a chance to ask question or doubts to the teacher right there and then. By doing this, they get to participate more actively in class and they also will have an opportunity for them to learn something new from their fellow classmates. Online learning is a method of learning that an individual learns outside of the classroom and classified as distance learning.

I chose to discuss Online Learning vs. Traditional Learning for this final project. Since 1999, the debate on the differences and similarities between traditional and online learning has been ongoing. Notably, this was the time when institutes began to use internet as a way of conveying distant education. Despite the differences that are there, it is worth noting that they are being narrowed down since technology is emerging prevalently. These facts beg the question; how do the two learning formats differ and what can one expect during transition to eLearning? Before seeking answers to this question, it is worth mentioning that I chose this topic because even though I am currently taking online classes, I wanted to research and learn more about the different benefits of online learning. Also, I am interested in researching on the major differences between online learning and traditional learning.

Central to an online learning community needs to be a core set of community values that develop a learning atmosphere and an environment that respects the opinion of each of its members. The foundation of this set of values should be a dedication to mutual respect of all members of the community. A learning environment can only be established when every member of the community feels that they are free to express ideas and opinions without the judgement or harassment of fellow members.
