For a functional classroom, respect must play a large role. While there are many aspects of respect, three major roles needed are respect of students, respect of teachers, and respect of property. First, in a functional classroom there must be a respect of the students from the teacher. As according to Dr. Seuss, “A person’s a person no matter how small.” By respecting their students, a teacher is more likely to have a positive response in their classroom environment, leading to less classroom issues and adversity. Without these issues, a class is less likely to be distracted by inter-student issues, and more likely to be able to pay attention, as there is less distraction present. A teacher is an elder and figure of authority to all students, and deserve and need to be treated as such. By not respecting their teacher, students are less likely to get a valuable education, as instead of being able to focus their time, attention, and resources on educating their students, they instead have to focus these valuable qualities on trying to control their students and keep them in line. Even if only a few students cause problems, this still harms the entire class, as teachers still have to take the same class time to stop other students’ misbehavior, which is beyond unfair to the students that are behaving in an orderly and respectful manner. Setting high expectations for students and believing in their abilities to achieve are equally prominent characteristics for teachers to have. Respect: The classroom environment is one were respect is a two-way street. In this classroom students respect the teacher and teacher other, while the teacher shows respect to each of the students. Any differences that students have from one another are respected and dealt will appropriately so that students feel safe and welcomed into the classroom community.
It is important for a teacher to challenge disruptive behaviour immediately and consistently. I feel by trying to make lessons enjoyable and providing work that helps students to achieve minimizes disruptive behaviour. The use of good communication by the teacher can also be a useful tool. This includes the use of the voice, phrasing, eye contact and body language. For example, using an assertive tone when making a request or physically positioning yourself near disruptive students.
What is respect? Is the way people should be treated, how you would want to be treated, and should it come naturally or should it be taught? Respect is what are world is built on, I feel that the phrases like “reap what you sow” explain what respect works like. For example to when I am rude to someone they tend to be rude back, the same works with respect. When being disrespectful to someone you most likely will disrespect you right back. Not everyone follows these thoughts of respect. Actions like these can lead to dangerous places, people begin to break boundaries that were once built on respect.
In order to enhance learning, I would like to share with you some of my personal experiences in the classroom in hopes that we can learn from them. In the best class I ever had, the teacher did not belittle students - questions were answered sincerely and we were treated like true adults. In addition, in the best class I ever had, the students did all of their required work and then some. In other words, students read all the assigned readings, met deadlines early, and asked meaningful questions. The open communication between the professor and the students made it the best class ever! There was a mutual sense of respect and you could just tell it stimulated learning! On the contrary, in the worst class I ever had, the teacher did not respect the students. For example, class time was not utilized to the fullest and student concerns did not seem important to the professor. In the worst class I ever had, the students did not respect their professor. Mrs. Park’s classroom is an environment in which respect is mandatory. To promote this attitude, Mrs. Park has student-created posters on the classroom walls. The posters include sayings such as, “Kindness Matters”, “Don’t be rude to your peers, even if they are being rude”, “Rise Above”, and “Don’t feed into the bad”. By taking the time out of her content instruction, the students are able to see that Mrs. Park cares about them as individuals.
