“How many things have to happen to you,” Robert Frost Writes, “before something occurs to you?” A person wakes up every morning to the same gray walls and eats the same flavorless slop. Seeing no changes they seem to ask themselves if life is worth living. They are unhappy but are afraid of new environments and unknown areas. Wishing things can go back to when their worries were as simple as trying to memorize the multiplication tables. Although it is written that change is in every person’s destiny, there are several reasons a person might or might not seek out change. For instance, a person’s environment or way of living can be one of the hardest things to change. Living in the projects, bills to pay and people to obey are a few reasons many steer away from change. Secondly unexpected life events like suddenly having to become a parent and learning how to raise a baby while trying to balance sudden deaths that may occur. Thirdly, discovering a person’s true emotions for another human being can create what I like to call a domino effect. Whether you consider the environment to be the atmosphere around you or the place to which a person calls home, one thing is certain that in any environment a person must adjust in order to survive, and through any adjustments comes change.

Changes in life can be tough to go through and sometimes they can be easy. Some of these things are harder than others and some can be a better choice. Like moving is one thing that changed my way i looked at people. Then there is growing up, growing up can be hard. Last but not least there is education. These things that you experience can change your perspective on how you look at life.

Counseling is defined as ”the use of therapeutic strategies to help clients address personal concerns and mental health issues” (Nystul, 2016). Pursuing counseling as a career involves many years of formal study and certification or licensure. After receiving licensure to practice as a professional counselors it is a requirement to maintain involvement and certification in certain associations in order to hold your license. These association often require further education and/or professional practice in order to maintain membership in these associations. It is quite obvious that counseling requires a large amount of commitment and passion in order to pursue it as a career and maintain a title as a counselor. I have conducted an interview with a professional counselor in order to further understand the experience of being a counselor. The interview that I conducted explores the requirements of maintaining and receiving a counselling career, the experience of being a counselor, and what characteristics or skills a professional may have. The Individual who agreed to the interview was a counselor by the name of Susie Facio. Susie Facio, through this interview, will be giving us a look at what influenced her to become a counselor, what her work entails on a day to day basis, and what qualities and skills she has acquired in order to become a successful counselor.

The only real change comes from inside. There is nothing in life that will ever change you drastically unless you let it. Life will only change you if you let it, that's why people walk around like they are protecting themselves with an imperceptible forcefield of false sangfroid attempting to act like they have their entire life together. The only way to perceive change is to go through a slow process of self development. In the movie Cast Away, Tom Hanks does a marvelous job of portraying how isolation and desperation can have a negative toll on a fragile mind.

The profession of counseling has a rich and bold history, evolving through the years from varied disciplines and birthing diverse specialties and branches along the way. Often referred to as the youngest of the counseling specialties is clinical mental health counseling. Despite physical health’s grasp on the nation, mental health has been a major focus at various times throughout history and continues to become an ever growing concern for people in general. As people come to better understand mental health issues and the demand for services grows, it is important to look at how clinical mental health counseling, and the counseling profession in general, has developed over time and how it has advanced to meet the needs of those seeking services.

John F Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, once said that, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” This quote means that change is unavoidable and that it is always happening. Change occurs whether we want it to or not and because of that, we must continue to look forward. Some of the changes that occur in a person’s life are minor and other changes are more significant.

Students need to feel like they have something they can gain from seeking counseling. If they don’t feel like they will get that with the selection of counselors on their campus, they would rather hold their problems in. “The idea that client preferences regarding the particular characteristics of counselors may critically influence such factors as whether the client seeks help, the duration of counseling, subsequent client evaluation of counseling, and certain aspects of the counseling interaction has long held currency in counseling theory and research (Strohmer, 2003).” Strohmer stated that half of the minority clientele dropout of counseling after the initial meeting in comparison to a third of the White clients. People can change from being forced, or just wanting to transform for the better. In Charles Dickens’ classic story A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge learns to change for the better. He is accompanied by three ghosts, Past, Present and Future, that make him realize he needs to alter his actions. People can adapt mentally and physically. Their fate lies in the hands of other people willing to accept them for who they are or not. Willing to accept people that are brave enough to change is a good trait to have. Wanting a drastic transformation in your life will require assistance of showing sedulous care, perseverance, and commitment.

Starting this course in August, I didn’t realize the power that multicultural counseling had instilled in it. The fact that its central focus is around social justice and equality is a characteristic our society much needs today. Throughout the duration of this class, I learned about multicultural counseling as a whole, new theories that can be applied specifically to different racial/ethnic minorities, the ACA code of ethics, and who I want to be as a future counselor.

I am a lover of people. I especially enjoy working with children, and people who are battling with drug addiction, specifically those who are desperately seeking help. It has always been my passion to make children happy, and also to see people live a promising and meaningful life. Moreover, living in a society where illicit drugs are plaguing our society, and controlling the minds of many civilians, I believe that stricter laws need to be implemented in order to eradicate the use of illicit drugs. Correspondingly, it became my mission to gain the knowledge needed, in order to help with addressing this issue. Additionally, I want to ensure that young children are living in a healthy environment that is beneficial to their health

According to Heraclitus, the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher, there was no permanent reality except the reality that change is inevitable, inescapable and immutable (Heraclitus, 2016). So the saying about change being the only constant is very true because things are always evolving and changing. The world revolves, seconds tick away, minutes turn to hours, nothing ever stays the same. In our day to day lives, we face constant changes in our families, jobs, and health (Manning & Curtis, 2012). Whether rational or not, most people fear change. It is important to stop fearing and resisting change because it is only traumatic if you try to resist it. It is important to realize that if things stayed the same, there would be no room for growth or

Change is when a person does not follow their everyday routine. They may want to try something different, or be forced to. Change can be for the good and the bad. Places can deal with change ranging from the weather, to the animals present, or the seasons changing. Also, objects can deal with change too. Objects like an iceberg can start to melt, or a forest fire can kill many trees in an area. As a human, we are the ones deciding on change. We are in a position to make big decisions and possibly even become a leader in order for change to happen. If one person starts to change, others will follow and hopefully, the change benefits all.

As a potential counselor, there are different reasons why I choose this journey to be a helper, servant and a leader. Not only was my early experiences in life a stepping stone towards this path, but my faith in God and the realities of life led me as well. Even though I am still creating my future towards this goal, there is no doubt that I am called to be in servitude to others. In this journey, I am appreciating the learning fundamentals I have gained from the academic coursework, professionals/teachers and experience that I have encountered to be molded into a multicultural competent counselor. By taking advantage of this opportunity of learning, I have chosen a theoretical orientation that best suits me as a potential clinician according to my beliefs, values and logical thinking. It is also noteworthy to indicate that the self-awareness of my beliefs, values, interests and thought process has been further explored due to the assessments and activities of the Life Story Board, Meyer-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Strong Interest Inventory (SII), My Career Story, and Career Genogram, including a reflection of my spiritual walk with Christ.
