Personal Reflection on College Life:
Contrary, to what others have stated about online college classes, I found that there are many advantages and disadvantages for those who choose to advance in their career. Online college courses have become worldwide allowing individuals like me to make their own decisions on how to manage their college courses. Before I made a decision to take college courses online I had to be sure I was up for the challenge. Online college classes require the same amount of commitment as the traditional colleges. As I made the decision to attend online college courses I also explore every element of life factors and different skill techniques to help me succeed in my college classes.
Student Self Appraisal of Learning: I was instructed to complete a student self appraisal of learning (SSAL). Looking over the entire competency content of the SSAL, I realized that
Online colleges are able to do away with the admission schedules and are able to admit students for the course any time of the year. With this mode of learning, the institutions can reach out to a larger number of students and need not limit the number of students per course, as is the case with classroom or day college
It is the nature of the educational norms to take many forms. For many of you, school is the traditional form of education. For some, it is a case of home study with frequent visit to the teacher. But lately there is a resourceful development which is called the online education. Suppose you are unable to complete the regular college degrees in time due to some reason. Then you have the option getting the online degree which can be equally resourceful for you. But there are some things to consider when you choose online colleges:
Being an online student is never a easy task in today’s time because there are so many distractions in our homes. If it’s not the TV blaring in the background, then it is the cell phone ringing; it’s the many notifications appearing everywhere, and most importantly simply just everyday life problems. This has to be the biggest weakness I have learned about being an online student. However this is something I have learned how to overcome in the last two years, because without online classes I would be forced to move away from my job and family to earn a degree. The Cumberland’s however has made the process of earing my degree very easy, and after completing OREN 120 I am even more prepared for completing my Human Service degree here at UC. This class has shown me how to navigate through many of the recourses, which are available at UC. The next thing I have learned is how the layout of the class here at UC operates, and what is expected from each student. The next thing this class showed me was that I have chosen the correct degree program because of the career assessment test that was taken earlier in the semester. Finally after completing this class I now know the path I need to take to reach the career I plan to have once I have graduated with my bachelor’s degree, and my master’s degree from University of the Cumberland’s.
I believe that online learning is a more efficient way of learning than a traditional on-campus course. This brings up a question this paper is going to attempt to answer. Are online courses a better way of learning than a traditional on-campus class? Information from online sources, written by educated individuals and important organizations, will be used throughout this paper. These sources will help support the claim that online courses do, in fact, offer a better way to learn.
The Ohio State University continues to change, adapting and integrating successful and new educational practices, to fit the needs of their students. One of the biggest changes taking place is the growing popularity of online education. Over the years, the Ohio State University has offered a number of online courses which continues to grow each year. Because of such growth, many play with the idea that Universities, such as Ohio State, could eventually offer a completely online education. I believe that the expanding variety and availability of these online courses will allow students to take many of their courses online. However, I also believe that while online courses successfully help a variety of students, not all students should seek this kind of education. Some students may challenge my view by saying the benefits of an online education outweigh the costs, while, other students are afraid to stray from tradition and, therefore, do not give online education thought. Even though online education is not suited for everyone it’s benefits such as convenience, price, and flexibility often overrides the importance of effectiveness and quality in the eyes of a student.
Online classes are rapidly becoming a more popular and accepted option among many students. An online course is a course where all or most course material is delivered online and there is little to no face-to-face contact with the instructor or other students in the class. Although online classes have been around for quite a long while, they have only recently become more popular among students. According to one article on the topic of online education, “6.7 million students enrolled in at least one online course in fall 2011—an increase of more than 500,000 students compared to 2010” (Bird). Another article says that in 2014, “an additional 411,000 students enrolled in their first online course increasing the total number of online students in the U.S. to 7.1 million,” a 6.1 percent increase from the number of students enrolled in the year of 2012 (Vista College). This article also states that “one out of every three higher education students has at least one online course; an all-time high” (Vista College). This recent increase in the popularity of online classes may have been caused because of advances in and increased use of technology, the accessibility and convenience of online classes and the flexibility they provide, and because online classes allow the student to work at his/her own pace.
The most important feature of distance learning is that online schools offer flexibility for prospective students. This allows students the ease of attending class in their own time and the place of their choosing. Flexibility is very important for students with hectic schedules such as balancing school, work, and personal life. In fact, studies have shown that online colleges are specifically designed to cater to busy students. Studies have shown that about 1,000 schools offer online curriculum using distance learning
“Nearly 5.8 million people are enrolled in online college courses, with 28% of all college students enrolling in at least one online course” says the college guide. The open education database says that, “The current challenges facing traditional colleges and universities, including higher tuition, budget cuts, and course shortages, have caused many students to search for alternatives” (1). Currently a lot of students apply for classes that have the option to take the online course over the traditional course. Then, they wonder which method would best suit them and be more convenient. In addition, the open education database says that, “Nearly three million students currently enrolled in fully online degree programs and six million taking at least one online course as part of their degree program, online education has clearly become one of the most popular higher education alternatives” (1). It comes down to finding the best type of education courses that adapts to student’s desires. The best type would be an online course of learning because it has a flexible scheduling and it’s very convenient and the overall cost of tuition is better than traditional education.
Getting your education is a very important thing to do in your lifetime, and there are many ways to do so. The two most common ways of getting your degree, whether it be a high school diploma or a college degree, are online courses and traditional courses, which is face to face, classroom classes. According to the results of a new national research study (Karambelas 1), 78% of more than 1000 students surveyed still believe that it is easier to learn in a classroom, in other words taking traditional courses. So, when taking online courses rather than traditional courses, you should compare and contrast keeping up with your work, making sure you have a stable place to do your work, and managing your time precisely.
Higher education has become an important commodity in today’s society. We are told as children that college is the only way to obtain a good job and secure our future. Once a student has decided to pursue. The traditional learning experience is sold as we tour campuses. This is the way higher education has been completed since its inception. Society has evolved and so has the ways to obtain higher learning. Students now have the option to complete their learning online, as well as, the traditional route. Online learning has been looked at as a lower level of learning, compared to the traditional classroom setting. I believe that online learning has now evolved to the level that it is equal to the traditional classroom setting. I also believe that online learning adds additional benefits to students when used in conjunction with traditional learning. To better understand this, a knowledge of the different settings will need to be explained.
Online education has rapidly become a popular alternative to traditional education, due to the flexible nature of the courses and also the fact that the online learning environment may not require additional expenses. However, some people find traditional learning to be more advantageous than online learning. The traditional learning environment provides some people with more support throughout their scholastic career. When looking at online education versus a tradition education, one must consider a few things: flexibility, the social aspect, and personal discipline, and financial obligations. This paper will provide a comprehensive look at the advantages of online education versus traditional education.
In a traditional classroom setting you have set hours in which you can attend, hindering some people from having the opportunity to attend a traditional campus. When it comes to online schooling you have complete flexibility. Of course with this flexibility and freedom comes a price. Online students must be driven enough to complete their assignments alone (Illinois Online Network). Online students do not have professors or other students reminding them in offhand ways of assignments they have to complete or tests to study for. A worthy online course should be “a convenient way to receive their education – not an easier way” (Illinois Online Network). This is to say that online courses should be just as engaging and challenging as a traditional classroom setting. They should not be cheat ways for students to float into having degrees. This is a main reason that not all types of classes should be available online.
Online education provides an individual with much more flexibility than the traditional education. Students that take online courses are provided with the facility to work along with carrying on their studies. Many students with great potential are not able to continue their studies just because they are not able to afford the fee and other expenses associated with education. Online education brings students back to the world of academia by providing them with flexible schedules. The students can adjust their studies according to their work schedule rather than having to adjust their work schedule according to their studies. Thus, an individual having online education is more empowered as compared to the students of traditional education.
Students now have the option of not only obtaining their education through one of the many online based colleges, but they can also choose from many local colleges as well. Students will receive the same value of an education online just as they would in a traditional on-campus school. Online schools have their advantages and disadvantages and it is a relatively new environment so it is best to consider both the pros and the cons of taking online courses.
Today, there are more options than ever for obtaining a college education. Traditional and online college classes make this possible. Online courses create new educational possibilities for many people who have not considered college before. Traditional classes help the student to achieve their goal with more of a personal setting between the students and instructors. Both online and traditional colleges have the same goals in mind: to provide students with an education and to award degrees.
