Social media has been a topic of debate for years. Some people are strongly against any use of it while others like the instant connection it provides. A major concern over social media is the lasting effects it has on teenagers. Social media can affect teenagers through many ways including things like their self-esteem. Cyberbullying is a raging topic of discussion centered around teens social media use. It can also effect their people skills and create a lack of community involvement. Some parents think that watching what their children do on social media is an invasion of privacy but is your concern for their privacy greater than your concern for their safety? Social media poses a great danger to today’s children. It can affect many aspects of their lives.

Since the early 2000s we have changed the meaning of what it means to be social. We have exchanged letters for texts, and faces for pixels. We have in a way become more social and lonely a society could be and we are still progressing. In a less dramatic tone, social networking is a way to contact anyone around the world; from friends to strangers. But the big issue is, what is it doing to our youth and sociaty as a whole. As for our argument we seem to have a case of how good or bad these types of interactions are.

Thesis: Stay in the present moment, don’t let yourself believe you’re going to forget a memory because you didn’t document it through social media.

Social media tricks people into believing others are living a rather lavish life, more than they are. They post only the highlights of their lives, and never the negative. It makes others view them falsely and more presentable than they actually are, which makes those viewing their profiles feel less satisfied with themselves and their lives. There are even some people who drop all social media because of how terrible it makes them feel, but there are also others who thrive for the attention of social media and go through ridiculous tasks to take the perfect picture. Even I can admit how self-centered I really am, my whole Instagram over explodes with pictures of just me, when I don’t get enough likes or comments I sometimes delete it as I think it’s not good enough.

Social media and texting can decrease your social skills if all we do is spend time on social media and texting because if all we do is type and not talk we will slowly lose the ability to interact with each other. I challenge the decision to allow teenagers more access to social media and texting. Social media and texting can often cause distractions, lead to suicide, and loss of social skills amongst one another.

Social media is used as an outlet to express feelings, thoughts, perspectives, and creative ideas and more to the world. There are numerous reasons as to why I use social media, a few entails connections, personal branding, and updates on entertainment. The main social platformsthat I am most active on are Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. Each platform is used in different ways because they each serve different purposes. Instagram is used for personal branding.Twitter is used for connections and updates on entertainment, news, and personal blogging. Snapchat is used for social connections. I use these different social media apps on my spare time between classes, when I’m bored, and before I go to sleep. There are many aspects to socialmedia, but usually they are categorized into either the positive or negative. Social media is an outlet for many teens today, including myself. Generally, I use my social platforms for personal branding, social connections, and entertainment updates. On the Times article “The Secret Language of Girls on Instagram,” written by Rachel Simmons, she states: Girls can project a persona they may not have time, or permission, to show off in the classroom: popular, social, sexy. Cultivating a certain look is so important that it's common for girls to stage 'photo shoots' with each other as photographers to produce shots that stand out visually. In the recent decade, there have been numerous technological advances that we are able to take advantage of today. There are now self-driving cars, augmented reality devices, as well as millions of websites for almost everything. Out of all the latest online features we can access, social media networking has made the greatest impact to the most number of people. There are over 1.59 billion active Facebook users, over 400 million active Instagram users, and over 320 million active Twitter users (Richards, 2015). The constant updates and numerous ways to customize your own profiles give people of all different backgrounds something to enjoy. These numbers prove that the majority of our population are impacted by social media on a daily basis. Although social media can be a great way to interact, meet, and communicate with people regardless of distance, there can be many negative aspects.

Social media is a vast part of people's life in the 21st century. Social media allows us to connect with other parts of the world, obtain news, and see what celebrities are doing. One phenomenon about social media is how it saves life's. Also exposures to areas hit by natural disasters such as flooding, tornado, and earthquakes just to name a few. The use of social media has given people a new way to help in relief efforts. History shows that BuzzFeed has consistently been popular across many of the most commonly-used social media platforms. In November of 2016, BuzzFeed’s Tasty (the popular cooking channel and one of BuzzFeed’s 4 main tabs on their homepage) partnered with RITZ Crackers to help increase store sales during the popular holiday shopping period. The videos featured Tasty’s unique aesthetic for step-by-step recipe videos, shot from above to show what someone would see when cooking. When a photo is sent on Snapchat, the user has the control of the amount of time that the receiver can view the photo, one to ten seconds. Then, the photo disappears on the smart device, but the other person is able to screenshot that photo and do what they wish with it. Television, radio, and social media are all ways to spread information. The 24/7 news cycle plows forward mercilessly on our desks, in our cars, and in our pockets. Thousands and thousands of messages and voices bombard us from the moment we wake up, fighting for our attention. All we see and hear, all day long, is news, and most of it is bad. No realizing the everlasting impact social media sites such as Facebook has on our lives, we reframe from using them in a manner of empowerment, uplifting and bring people together. Thinking back on the most recent election, we know that social media including Facebook can be used to influence the vote of the American people. Social media can be used to tremendously impact the American people way of thinking or the way of perceiving an individual. Social media has impacted America in so many ways for the modern day political campaign. It has become one of the world’s most powerful news outlet. The news that is posted on social media is not always accurate but it reaches a lot of people very fast. Three ways that political candidates can use Facebook are for spreading their platforms, polling their supporters, and assessing their standing in an election.

Not only is most of the world on social media, but many of the users are addicted to it. Checking social media has become a habit and part of many people’s daily routines, especially teens. Most studies are based around teens, because they are the most frequent users. In fact of the ninety-five percentage of teenagers that are on the internet, eighty-five percent of them are on social media (Marwick and Boyd 1). With the colossal amount of new and ignorant users, there is bound to be a plethora of issues to surface. This brings a large factor of immaturity to the table, increasing the intensity of all issues. Wray Herbert, a journalist of psychological science, writes in his blog about the teenage brain that adolescents “lack judgment and the ability to weigh future consequences” (1). This basically means that they perform actions based on impulsivity, without thinking how it will affect themselves and others involved. Teenagers have a hard time controlling this behavior because they are at a time in their lives where they make mistakes and have to learn from them. The easy fix would be to just delete all your accounts, right? That is the theory that many people think is the answer; however, they are wrong and it can be easily disproved.

How many times have you liked a picture about a cute puppy, but scrolled past the children in Romania, who are homeless? This simple question is not meant to make you feel bad. Thousands of Americans do this every day when they are scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The real question, however, is why do we, as a society, tend to “like” the cute things, like the puppy, but ignore the real-life problems in the world, such as orphan children in Romania, a hot topic as of late. The answer is desensitization. Desensitization sits heavily in researcher’s stomachs when they see that most people like the happy family story, but cringe and don’t bother to click on the link to the War on ISIS. This is why social media is not a good outlet for people to display their lives. Social media gives an unrealistic expectation to how lives should be lived when all that is seen on Facebook is the “together” family, and not the “broken” family.

James Madison, the father of the constitution, created the first amendment to protect the rights of the citizens by allowing them to have their freedom of speech. People finally had a chance to express their thoughts on the government without having the fear of being arrested. But how has the use of this gift of freedom change over time? Before, freedom of speech has been used only by the press to get the news out in the world, informing everyone the truth of what is occurring around them. Now thanks to the invention of social media, anyone, anywhere could get their thoughts out on the internet where anybody could seen them. Social Media is the technology that has been growing rapidly since 1999. Starting out as a way for people to communicate with others, Social Media has become as an addiction for people as teens with their phones. People started expressing their views on this world in the name of freedom of speech, not knowing the limits to where they should stop. What many social media users don’t realize, is that they are allowed to share their thoughts and beliefs, but should be aware that they might be hurting others out there who don’t view something in a similar way. Humans have a strong desire to connect with others and the most popular way of doing so is through social media. Social media has been around since the late 1990s and has risen in popularity due to its ability to allow individuals to communicate with others. Though social media allow communication between individuals, this aspect does not always have a positive outlook on it. This bright and thrilling experience has the potential to turn into a dangerous participation that should not be authorized, most notable kids due to them being the demographic who uses social media the most. Kids are known to perform certain actions that do not create a positive outcome. For social media to allow these types of actions, it will only evolve the platform into a dangerous environment that isn’t suitable for the youth. Due to this, kids should not have social media due to the activities that they could perform. These activities could potentially lead to negative results that can affect their lives.
