In the world of social media people from all over the world are able to connect. However, is this connection really good? Are strangers being able to view your every move ok? Why not social media? You as a social media user are in charge of what your audience is able to see, but at the age of 12 are you really capable of understanding this power and controlling it? Adolescents under the age of 18 should not be allowed to have a social media account, where they can encounter potentially dangerous and life threatening situations such as bullying, child molestation, and sex trafficking. The innocence and immaturity of a learning and growing child prevents them from understanding the potential online dangers they can encounter, such as

Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending intimidating, or hurtful messages to others. This has been occurring more frequently on the internet, and must be stopped. Many people have been damaged in many ways, being victims of cyberbullying; however, cyberbullying is not an act that should be punished or prosecuted for since there are many young and immature people in the world that believe it to be amusing.

There is a growing crisis in technology that needs to end. This particular crisis is known as cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the use of an electronic device to bully a person. If a cyberbully tries to send a mean message, some people may ignore it or some people might take it the hard way. Lots of people may even think suicidal thoughts or actions. Cyberbullying should always be punishable and needs to be illegal.

Social media platforms have many benefits if it is used in the correct manner. Social media companies are always trying to endorse the next best product and influence everyone and anyone to use it. Some of these companies have strict policies in place in order to protect their reputation and uphold ethical guidelines as a responsible business. Not all social media platform have these strict ethical guidelines and tend to care only about the profit gains and obtaining a high marketable profile. This negligent act of greed is one of the problems, which social media platforms face. The other factors are the people who use social media platforms, especially adolescents. Adolescents 11–18 year-olds spend over 11 hours per day exposed to electronic media (Shapiro & Margolin, 2014). Adolescents interact with a multitude of different social media platforms. Some have made it very convenient for these young teens to have access to social media platforms. If the adolescents conduct themselves accordingly while they are on social media, then there are not any issues. It is when the adolescents do not use social media as a positive, engaging experience but deflect themselves into engaging in deviant behaviors. These irresponsible actions by adolescents are contributing to atrocities on social media. Maybe these actions could have possibly been prevented if the creators of social media platforms incorporated more restrictions and reporting on their media platforms. These

Nevertheless on 2004, Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg, a 19-year-old who created the biggest social media that changed the world. Till this day, Facebook has reached up to 2 billion users and still counting. Nonetheless, most users are from their teens to mid-40s, that have the capability of spreading information across the globe setting a chain reaction that created and spread fake news. “Fake news is easily spread through social media to large numbers of people who are willing to believe and share the fictional material." (Brennen 169-172) According to Gretel, “In the midst of a “nationwide debate over the proliferation of fake news on social media sites – and, as one 2015 study by the Media Insight Project shows, at a time when nearly 9 in 10 Millennials regularly get news from Facebook – the numbers, at first glance, may point to a bleak, uninformed future.” Therefore, teens need to use social media to disintegrate some of the repercussions of news.

Social media: like, tweet, favorite, save, retweet, love, share, post, snap, comment, subscribe, follow, notify, blog, chat, hashtag, tag, troll, and poke. An entirely new vocabulary was created. Snapchat your grandma, pin a new recipe, tweet your celebrity crush. The possibilities are endless. But is it really that great? People lie about where they’ve been, what they’ve ate, and even who they are. Everyone should permanently abandon social media because it’s destructive to the user’s health, it fosters the use of screens as a crutch, and hinders productivity. Some us social media because it’s fun. But the fun factor should depreciate once the health risks are taken into consideration.

There are numerous reasons as to why I use social media, a few entails connections, personal branding, and updates on entertainment. The main social platformsthat I am most active on are Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. Each platform is used in different ways because they each serve different purposes. Instagram is used for personal branding.Twitter is used for connections and updates on entertainment, news, and personal blogging. Snapchat is used for social connections. I use these different social media apps on my spare time between classes, when I’m bored, and before I go to sleep. There are many aspects to socialmedia, but usually they are categorized into either the positive or negative. Social media is an outlet for many teens today, including myself. Generally, I use my social platforms for personal branding, social connections, and entertainment updates. On the Times article “The Secret Language of Girls on Instagram,” written by Rachel Simmons, she states: Girls can project a persona they may not have time, or permission, to show off in the classroom: popular, social, sexy. Cultivating a certain look is so important that it's common for girls to stage 'photo shoots' with each other as photographers to produce shots that stand out visually. Television, radio, and social media are all ways to spread information. The 24/7 news cycle plows forward mercilessly on our desks, in our cars, and in our pockets. Thousands and thousands of messages and voices bombard us from the moment we wake up, fighting for our attention. All we see and hear, all day long, is news, and most of it is bad. No realizing the everlasting impact social media sites such as Facebook has on our lives, we reframe from using them in a manner of empowerment, uplifting and bring people together. Thinking back on the most recent election, we know that social media including Facebook can be used to influence the vote of the American people. Social media can be used to tremendously impact the American people way of thinking or the way of perceiving an individual. Social media is supposed to be used to make it easier to access information and to stay in touch with loved ones. However, the rapidly growing trend is sharing one’s suicide, murder, or location. Posting on social media can cause harm to one’s self or others, even going as far as death. When one is posting on social media, he or she does not think of the dangers it might cause. This is a major problem in society today, therefore, social media should be taken down.
