Measuring Personality Imagine being able to scan anyone to know their minds profile. People present themselves through their personality, and psychology is like the minds functionality breakdown. To discover the basics of how one would determine personality psychologically, it is important to understand the basics of what psychology is and what personality is. There are many theories and measures of personality and how to properly determine and break ones personality. One obvious way to measure and examine a state of someone would be to test them. There are many personality tests to determine the strong suits, weaknesses, and the inbetweens of someones personality. One test in particular is called the Jung personality test. What the Jung personality text basically does is it asks a series of questions that covers different fields of how one would act and feel in various different fields based on some different life situations and concepts and uses that to decipher a personality field that best fits the tested persons answers. A more detailed explanation on how the Jung personality test works is by how the creator, Carl Jung, thought how personality was split into three different fields, these field had two opposite categories in them, telling which one would fit an individual. The first field would be to fall between either having extraversion or introversion tendencies. These tendencies have to do with ones energy and expression; extraversion being to have more external energy, and introversion being have to do with internal expression to the world. Then the second section is having sensing or intuition tendencies, have to do with
Burton, western & Kowaslki (2015) describes Personality as the enduring patterns of thought, feeling, motivation and behaviour that are expressed in different circumstances. In other words it can be defined as differences in characteristics in a person, including their way of thinking, likes, dislikes, sociability, openness, feelings and behaviour, which make them the person they are and differentiates them from others. All these traits when brought together is known to be the personality of that particular person.
Over the last 100 years, the underpinning concepts in the fields of psychology and counseling were wrought. Within this period, these concepts have transformed and evolved from somewhat crude conceptions of the psyche toward more holistic interventions and approaches. As the profession continues to move forward, adaptations of the original theorists regarding the nature of man and the development of personality continue to emerge. These adaptations, along with the integration of new concepts and ideas, continue to contribute to the field. The author describes his view of man and human nature, personality development, and explores potential implications for counseling.
Personality, like most core Psychology subjects, is difficult to define. Personality is essentially the science of describing and understanding people. No two people are the same; even identical twins will tell you that they are very different to their identical counterpart. There are some who are anxious and there are those who are risk-takers. There are some who are carefree while there are those who are highly-strung and there are those who are over-confident while some are just plain shy. It is this issue of differences that are fundamental to the study and examination of personality.
Psychology is defined by Merriam-Webster, as the science of mind and behavior. It is a study of how an individual's psyche can be created, developed, altered or destroyed. Carol Gilligan, a Harvard Graduate School professor, for many years has analyzed the psychological theory and development, specifically in a book entitled In A Different Voice.
Personality is looked at everyday purposely and accidently. Whether you are judging how your new professor for the semester will be, or if you are studying your best friend for a project, personality is studied abundantly. While there are many ways to define personality, there is not a worldwide definition around. Personality is the unique combination of patterns that influence behavior, thought, motivation, and emotion in a human being (boundless.com). That is one of many ways of defining personality. When examining personality, there are four main approachable theories including: The Psychodynamic Approach, The Trait Approach, The Social-Cognitive Approach, and The Humanistic Approach.
A person’s personality says much about who he or she is. People define personality in different ways. Researcher after researcher has tried to come up with the best definition for what personality truly means. Case studies, correlational studies, and experimental designs are some of the most commonly used methods of research. These methods help better define personality. The advantages and disadvantages of each method differ and can be helpful or hurtful to the research of an individual’s personality.
Personality is defined as the unique way in which each individual thinks, acts, and feels throughout life (Ciccarelli, 2014). Numerous individuals are curious in regards to their actions and how their mind works, thus leading companies to create personality tests, in order to provide individuals with some perspective on their personality. While individuals can take personality tests for leisure, personality tests are often utilized in situations such as job interviews, diagnosing mental disorders, and educational purposes. Two popular personality tests are the Keirsey Temperament Sorter and the Big Five Personality test. After taking both tests, I analyzed them using my knowledge of general psychology and of my own actions. I found the
Personality refers to our distinctinve thoughts and behaviors that we have. Everyone has a different type of personality and it changes throughout during our emotions.
Allport defines personality as ‘the dynamic organisation within the individual of those psychological systems that determine his unique adjustment to his environment’ (Allport, 1937). An individual’s unique personality traits and attributes are a powerful indicator of how he/she will interact with the work environment. The difference between average and outstanding employees can often be solely personality related. As the employee is the most valuable asset to the company, ‘selecting the right employee during the process is critical’ (Carbery and Cross, 2013, pp. 41-53)
In the textbook, the author defines the meaning of personality, meaning “psychological qualities that contribute to an individual’s enduring and distinctive patterns of feeling, thinking and behaving.”(Cervone & Pervin, 2013) Then the texts break down from the definition the words enduring, distinctive, “contribute to” and the phrase “feeling, thinking, behaving”. Enduring refers to the personality characteristics that are consistent across time and across different situations of a person’s life. The word “distinctive” in the definition refers to how personality psychology addresses features that differentiate people from one another. The phrase “contribute to” refers to how psychologists search for the factors that influence and explain an
Behaviour is partly governed by our intention to move towards a goal (Carver & Scheier, 2014). Intentions are formed through the belief that an action will lead to a particular outcome and that this outcome is desirable (attitude), not only to yourself, but also others (subjective norm). My goals for the Psychology of Personality unit are to contribute to group discussions (learning goal) and to keep up with my weekly content summaries (performance goal). To construct these goals, I had to believe contributing to group discussions will strengthen my understanding of the content, and that completing weekly content summaries will assist me in staying up to date and prepare for examinations. I also needed to believe these actions will result in
Psychology is the scientific study of thought and behavior, so our psychological characteristics are behavioral or personality traits that exemplifies

In the future, I ultimately intend to be a psychologist. With being a psychologist, I am taking on the responsibility on how to lead people into having an overall better life and promote positive change for them. Psychologists often specialize in studying and examining the brain and human behavior. That being said, psychology is a very important branch of science that attempts to help us stay sane!
“We are influenced by our own internal forces, forces of which we are unaware, have feelings towards, or urges we do not quite understand “(Freidman, 2012, p. 17). This is the struggle that personality psychology tries to understand, how and to what extent the unconscious forces plays a role in human behavior. It is believed that people are responsible for their own actions. There is a continuous struggle with personality psychology and the comprehension of and to what extent unconscious forces play in human behavior. “Meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances; if there is any reaction both are transformed” (Carl Jung 1993, p.57). There are various questions that are asked about the issues in personality psychology such as, “How important are social influences on the self, such as parental deprivation or excessive praise? Is the sense of self merely an inconsequential epiphenomenon or secondary perception arising from other forces that really matter? What is the core of who we are? A second core issue with the studies of personality studies is does each person require a unique approach? “Gordon Allport argued that a key aspect of the study of personality must focus on the individual and thus be idiographic” (p.18). To generalize an individual is a complication in itself because the personality of each person is complex in its own way so how can we generalize? Obtaining an answer to that question is still a dilemma. Allport complained
