Holding a management position is never an easy task. A balance of professional authority along with collegial friendship is required. Someone who is able to perfect this balance every day is Mr. Koppa Koppa, Equipment and Facilities Supervisor at the Marathon County Highway Department. Mr. Koppa has been working at the Marathon County Highway Department for over 40 years. He began his employment as a shop worker soon after his graduation from Marathon High School in 1975. Although he was never formally enrolled at an institution of higher learning, he took various night classes that aided in his understanding of the machinery he worked on daily. Koppa’s job. Each year, all supervisors are allocated a certain amount of money for the whole year. The budget is then divided into categories such as building and grounds or equipment repairs. Specifically, Mr. Koppa keeps track of his monthly expenses and makes sure that they stay within the guidelines of his budget. As the Marathon County Highway Department provides services for the state of Wisconsin, all spending needs to be carefully tracked. This, however, is not part of Mr. Koppa’s job responsibility. There is a mission statement and set of core values that include quality of work, acceptance of diversity, integrity, and stewardship of resources. These traits are expected to make employees more productive, give employees higher job satisfaction, and create a more team-friendly environment. At times, there have been minor legal issues. Most of the legal issues dealt with by the Marathon County Highway Department are cases involving private property that has been damaged by equipment. One of the most common legal situations dealt with involve mailboxes being hit by snowplows. Occasionally, road equipment is also involved in accidents with the motoring public. Both of these situations are typically easily resolved outside of the courtroom. Since Marathon County only operates locally, there are never international legal issues. Social responsibility is not taken lightly at the Marathon County Highway Department. Many measures are enforced throughout the year to promote environmental protection and to help the general public. In winter, snowplow operators drive safely. Managers try to choose the most environmentally friendly providers for salt and other materials. Internal efforts to be socially responsible include food drives and volunteering for the Salvation Army.
