Liberty is the naturally existing right of man to be free. Although it’s naturally occurring, it must be engaged with and people need to work to understand it. Liberty and free will go hand-in-hand. Free will is one’s ability to choose their own course of action, make their own decisions. Liberty is one’s right to free will. Man has a natural desire to be free. From the beginning of mankind this has been evident. Initially people existed on their own, doing whatever it took to survive. Yes one has the right to make these decisions and follow certain courses of actions but it’s important to look at how they got to these places. The ability to rationally think about and analyze a situation is very important when deciding how to react. Alan Bloom argued that people must be able to engage with literary works and ideas people they give you the ability to think for yourself, which some might say is true liberation. If you’re being oppressed and you don’t know any better, you might only see certain options. If shown a whole world of thought and critique this could easily change. There is of course the obvious answer, where you might say that freedom is the essence of not being controlled by anyone. In class it was discussed if people were not afraid of getting a bad grade they would not study or come to class. I believe this is true. Without this fear, people would take classes and never study or learn anything. If we took away the tickets for speeding was also discussed in class. If they were to disappear people would drive however they wanted without any regard to others. The roads would not be safe for people. This is another example of why we need this fear of consequence. I never thought about grade and studying and respecting the street signs were a fear until it was talked about in class. I just thought about it as rules to follow so we could avoid disaster. Compatibilist, individuals that believe their free will is controlled by a sovereign God, share the belief that free will and determinism go hand in hand (MzEllen, 2010). One theorist, Isaiah Berlin, focused on the difference between two different ways of thinking about political liberty (Cherniss & Hardy, 2010). Berlin called these two different concepts negative and positive liberty. According to Berlin, negative freedom can be defined as ‘freedom from’, that is, freedom from constraint or interference of others.
