Unions allow workers to fight for what they believe in, gives them a chance to have a vote and a voice and to protests against the things that are not fair. The flip side of this is that workers can be out of work; if they picket or protest for days, weeks or months until some agreement is reached if any. If workers persist in voting for union representation, all they have earned is the right to bargain. Firms can then stall, evade, drag out the negotiations, and make sure things go nowhere. (Sinyai, 2009). This can lead to bigger problems for the workers because the longer they are out of work the longer they go without pay. However I think that it is important to have labor unions to represent workers that have no political say in the work place, in the private as well as the public work force, workers should have the choice to be a part of a union if they choose to …show more content…
Virtually all large corporations and many smaller ones are politically active. (McGraw-Hill 2011). With larger groups like UAW they push to promote policies that are beneficial to workers and union members. These unions are indispensable; yes this can be critical for huge group like the United Auto workers. However; those who work alongside managers, such as technicians or service workers, it can be difficult for them to be a part of a union, because these workers are normally with their managers most of the time. Group organization that form unions, seem to have a stronger stance then those of induvial public or private unions. Groups tend to get their resources for their political activities from economic activity; these groups also include business firms and labor unions. (McGraw-Hill 2009). P.308. The more powerful the labor union is, the better the outcome. Yes Labor Union are indispensable because there are no other proof that the working-class; will make decent wages, have safe working conditions, or a voice on their job. By having these union can help and will continue to support the working
The purpose of the union is ensuring the labor can get their rights, such as minimum wages, working environment, and pensions and so on. The union supports labor that when a company gets profit, labor can get their reasonable benefit back. The trend of an organization is management in the twenty-first century. A company thinks an employee is part of assets in the organization. Therefore, the Human Resource Management is more valuable than the union to manage the employee.
Labor unions were established as a way for workers’ needs and grievances to be heard by management. According to Fossum (2012), “forming a union creates a collective voice to influence change at work” (p. 7). The collective voice of workers in a union holds much more power than any single employee’s voice. It can loudly draw attention to mistreatment or abuse of workers. The organized collective voice of workers demands to be treated in a fair way by its management in terms of wages, hours, benefits, and working conditions.
Organized labor affects the lives of many citizens everyday, often in a roundabout way. Labor Unions affect many different people from blue-collar workers to white-collar workers, stay-at-home moms, students, and retirees. Fewer; however realize the legal role Labor Unions have played and continue to play in the financial system, political affairs, and society in general. In today's society, more of our skilled hourly and unskilled workers belong to some sort of Labor Union and that is a good sign that Unions will not face extinction. As long as there is a need for higher wages, there will be a need for Unions.
The past of Unions is indisputable; however, the outlook can be altered to form a promising future. The reversal of history can be done through reconstruction and restatement of workers rights. A reestablishment of worker liberties should be considered in order to clarify any confusion in which present and prospective employees are faced with. Unions are notorious for being tyrannical and inconsiderate towards employees and thus union heads should confront this issue head on and give workers a voice (i.e. vote). In order to regain union strength in today’s society I believe Unions must give workers honorable rights and a democratic right to be heard.
Labor unions have existed in one form or another in the United States since the birth of the country. They were created in an effort to protect the working population from abuses such as sweatshops and unsafe working conditions. On the other hand, they have also been accused of crippling industries and consorting with organized crime over the decades. But in one way or another, labor unions have been
A Union is a group of workers who wanted something better from their company or facility, they are called strikers. Unions benefit workers in many ways, they help get workers' rights. Unions are formed because their working conditions are irritable. They all needed and wanted a change; Labor Unions were created to help the workers with work-related difficulties such as low pay, unsafe or unsanitary working conditions, long hours, and other situations. .
Labor unions date to the 19th century. The three labor unions were created to improve work life in the factories. Workers had long hours, poor conditions and low wages; while their employers enjoyed vast wealth. Labor unions are groups of workers and employees who bond together to get safer working conditions, better wages, and reasonable hours. Most famous union is the American Federation of labor (AFL), founded in 1886 by Samuel Gompers. Labor unions protect the rights of workers in specific industries. Labor unions tend to be more common in manufacturing, mining, construction, transportation, and the public sector. Labor unions have been around for a long time. The earlier unions were called craft unions, consisting of members who worked in the same trade such as carpenters and printers. Working people need to earn enough to support their families; good wages are a part of that, so are health care, paid sick leave and other rights that make sure that working people can do their jobs and take care of their families.
First some disclosure about myself: my mother was a strong union member for General Motors for over 32 years where she held several different offices in the union. My stepfather was a member of the local iron workers union and then a member of the union at Tinker Field Airbase. When I got out of high school I worked at General Motors wishing I could join the union. Within a year of being out of school I hired on the fire department and joined their local union where I was a member for over 22 years. Needless to say I have a long history with labor unions and the benefits they provide. I know unions have done great things for our nation and have been a counterbalance to greedy companies that take advantage of
In your post you focus on the idea that unions are not readily available now based on our current economy, however there still is a need or want for such organizations. There definitely has been a decline in unions that can be related to a number of factors, but the need for them probably still does exist. Many large corporations fought viciously to portray unions in a negative light and to highlight their shortcomings. In 2003, I witnessed a four month long strike by union grocery workers in Southern California (Jordan, 2004). With over 70,000 union members representing 900 grocery stores, the impact was significant. Eventually both sides would come to an agreement after consumers lost interest in supporting the strike. In the end, employees won better health care benefits, but lost some wage protections.
Today most labor unions in the United States are members of one of two larger umbrella organizations: the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) or the Change to Win Federation, which split from the AFL-CIO in 2005. Both organizations advocate policies and legislation favorable to workers in the United States and Canada, and take an active role in Democratic party politics. The AFL-CIO is especially concerned with global trade issues.
A major topic that comes up with unions is getting better wages for the employees. This is one of the main reasons that unions came to be. Workers of all fields were tired of being paid unfairly by big companies. They realized that they needed a way to organize themselves to fight for better pay. Unions helped aid in this fight. According to History.com, “ The formation of the Federal Society of Journeymen Cordwainers (shoemakers) in Philadelphia in 1794 marks the beginning of sustained trade union organization among American workers.” This was the first time workers tried to organize themselves to get more money for what they did. A key way that unions used workers to make businesses meet their demands was organized strikes. With these organized strikes, the big companies had to comply with some of the demands to raise the employee 's wage, or it would cost them more money in the long run. Strikes are a very powerful tool that unions have used often in the past. Unions orchestrated the strikes in the past pretty well, and the majority of strikes accomplished the goal they were trying to complete. Unions have always fought with companies to give the workers the pay they deserve.
In the absence of labor unions, workers may not be as involved in discussions concerning various aspects of their working lives. Although there are several reasons workers decide to join labor unions, the compensation and wage advantages, health and safety advantages and dignity and respect advantages drive workers to organize.
Unions have had a tremendous impact between the workers and the management. As stated before Unions given a voice to the workers and protect the worker from an organization. They have developed the standard for many
There are several reasons labor unions was formed in the United States. First, the worker form the union to fight the employer’s practice division of labor and unfair hiring that which employer divided skilled worker into teams, hire them to do part of the job then hire women and children at extreme low wages to do other parts. Second, if worker was injured on the job there was no compensation and the employee was deemed to be fault. Third, the working condition was poor and unsafe. Fourth, the workers receive low pay and long working hour with lack of benefit. Fourth, the workers believe there is strength in number, it will help them fulfill their demands.
The role of management and unions in society today is to protect the employee. The management team needs to make sure she/he is treating the employee fairly, needs to provide a good work environment. If management fails to do a good job and the employee feels discriminated, treated unfairly, feels discontent for different reason, management does not want the union to get involved, they feel respect for unions and will do whatever it takes to make their team happy. This is why so many companies have employee parties, employee recognitions, etc.
