Importance of Accountability

Why my chain of command have accountability it is easier for them to track down other soldiers in case they were needed for anything. Being accountable means being dependable, showing up to formation at the appointed time, being at the right place and at the right time and doing the right thing at the right time. It is also to see if everyone shows up to formation and or where they are supposed to be. Accountability is not

In case of something happening spontaneously and you don't have a clue where your weapon or sensitive items are. The Army spends a lot of money on equipment and property for soldiers, so the Army expects to know where its equipment and property is. No matter what, someone is always responsible for equipment in the Army. It goes to the highest officer to the lowest enlisted personal in the chain of command and back up again. Like in combat when there is a "code Red" the soldier knows that at a given and safe(safe as possible at least) time he or she should get to the rally point predetermined by his or her chain of command, that way he or she and his or her equipment can be accounted for. Accountability is used in many different ways, for example knowing if something is missing you could easy look at the accountability report to see if it was there before.

For example, if I had not been in my room when I was on quarters, and a fire had erupted in the barracks, I would now be putting my battle buddies or superiors trying to locate me at an extreme and unnecessary risk, especially if they were unable to contact me by phone or if I had not contacted the chain of command. With communication, punctuality and being at your prescribed place of duty all being essential facets of military life and having a direct correlation to the soldierly appearance and combat readiness of a unit, these kinds of faults and mistakes cannot be allowed to permeate our disciplined ranks and taint the effectiveness of our unit . Without punctuality, and therefore discipline there can be no effectiveness or efficiency in our mission of protecting our own and destroying our enemies. If we cannot efficiently destroy the enemy we are no longer an effective or worthwhile unit in the Army.

The importance of accountability, are being on time and in the right uniform. The main reason we have formations and that we are trying to keep account of personnel to know where everybody is at, at all times. I have learned in the past years that I have been in that being on time is the most important thing that you need to do. For one the accountability of personnel is major, it plays a big role in the deployment and the readiness of soldiers. I would have to say that I was wrong for not showing up at my appointed place of duty I should have gotten up and made it to the swimming pool. The numerical end product of personnel accountability process reflects the combat power of a unit.

It does not look well on them if they can not complete this task. This actually shows thats the soldier can't be depended on when they are needed. This also hurts them when they are being looked at for promotions or any favorable actions.

Accountability…. What does it mean? The responsibility of an individual or organization to account for its activities, accept responsibility for them, and to clearly show the results. Accountability should not be taken lightly, it is important for NCOs and squad leaders to have accountability over their soldiers. This could be at a formation or meeting, or through a phone call or text message. This is one of the most important things to make sure you have in order in the Army. The U.S. Army enforces accountability for many reasons; Inventories, Safety, and Work Procedures, and also just being able to keep track of military personnel's at all times. The Army follow a strict, firm, and structural policy or laws. The way accountability plays its role in the Army, it's like the back bone that holds everything together by keeping chaos or commotion at bay.

This essay I am going to write is about the importance of accountability in the army, and as to how it affect the units mission. In the United States Marine Corps it is very important to hold yourself accountable for all actions especially true the longer you are in. To myself it refers to the obligation of an individual to report formally to his superiors for the proper discharge of his responsibility. It is the answer ability of a subordinate to render an account of his activities to his superior. The person who accepts responsibility is accountable for the performance of the assigned duties. As such being late to work is a direct violation of accountability. Forgetting ones required materials for work may seem small and harmless but overall may develop into bigger issues if not dealt with accordingly.

Due to the fact, accountability is one of the fundamentals of the military.   It not only brings personal responsibility but it also shows the organization of a unit. The US Army depends solely on its soldiers, enlisted, warrant officers and commissioned officers alike. The military would not be anything without the soldiers. When soldiers are not there to perform there duties or they are late, that brings down the efficiency of the unit. Accountability is a great trait to have but it only comes with punctuality.

Personal experience could not been completed without coming across lack of effective communication skills within the military. The perception I have about the military was that military has never been a profession, but a National services provider. All this was a result of lack of effective communication within work place. Communication is about more than just exchanging information. It is about understanding the emotion and intentions behind the information. Effective communication is also a two way street. It is not only how you convey a message so that it is received and understood by someone in exactly the way you intended. It is also how you listen to gain the full meaning of what is being said and to make the other person feel heard and understood. Thesis: Effective communication within work place could be achieved with effective good listening skills that eliminate barriers to effective communication and providing feedback.
