Good Order and Discipline

Mission command belongs to the Army’s list of seven war fighting functions. While the other six of the Army’s war fighting functions specifically align to the application of combat power, mission command applies to leadership and its application. Mission command redefines the old construct of C2, command and control, by morphing the ideology into two distinct thoughts, the art of command and the science of control. Although mission command is a relatively new concept, it’s principles and application transcend time. This paper examines General Robert E. Lee’s application of the mission command principles at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Many of the standards that I would have frowned upon outside the u s army are essential to the work success within the United States military. Punishment of not following orders is not deemed to be a positive occurrence in an average person’s life, whereas the United States military guide maintains that punishment strengthens my determination and discipline and enables me to learn and fully take the importance of following orders in US army seriously. Not following orders is not an optional choice while living the standards of the United States military.

Discipline is very important for anyone who is part of the Uniformed Public Services. Discipline is put in place to maintain order and to make sure that everyone works to the best of their abilities. All the services are organised in a similar way with a clear rank structure and clearly defined roles and responsibilities, which all rely on discipline to work effectively.

In this essay, I will be looking at and justifying the role of discipline within the public services, as well as evaluating the impact of discipline. Discipline takes a massive role in the public services for many reasons. It is crucial for the servicemen to stick to the rules, which I will be demonstrating within my case study which looks at what happens when a Buckingham Palace Guard is seen pirouetting.

For example, if I had not been in my room when I was on quarters, and a fire had erupted in the barracks, I would now be putting my battle buddies or superiors trying to locate me at an extreme and unnecessary risk, especially if they were unable to contact me by phone or if I had not contacted the chain of command. With communication, punctuality and being at your prescribed place of duty all being essential facets of military life and having a direct correlation to the soldierly appearance and combat readiness of a unit, these kinds of faults and mistakes cannot be allowed to permeate our disciplined ranks and taint the effectiveness of our unit . Without punctuality, and therefore discipline there can be no effectiveness or efficiency in our mission of protecting our own and destroying our enemies. If we cannot efficiently destroy the enemy we are no longer an effective or worthwhile unit in the Army.

The purpose of this counselled essay is to explain my understanding and importance of following orders. This essay will have several sections to explain different areas where following orders effects. . I will cover the significance of following orders within the unit, prominence of following order within the artillery world, results of failure to follow orders, and how following orders will help me in the future. Military discipline is a special form of military relations. The key to all of teamwork, leading, and following is adhering to the instructions of those appointed over you which brings me to my next point. As soldiers we are drilled almost everyday to listen to commanders, NCO's and basically everyone higher in rank than us or in some cases people that have more time in service. We are taught discipline from day one in basic training when we hit the ground the first time doing pushups to the last right face in the last ceremony before we see our families. I am here to explain what military discipline, military respect, and disrespect are and the history behind these acts are. I will first give the definitions of military discipline; which is a state of order and obedience existing within a command. ay look at you, Discipline helps to complete certain jobs/instructions efficiently and correctly. in the military it is used to train people so that they are good at their job/career as they have improved due to discipline. Robert E. Lee once said of leadership, “I cannot trust a man to control others who cannot control himself” (Jones, 1875). This is an instance where I believe that even though this idea or thought was mentioned many years ago, it still has relevance today. I do not have an exact date of that quote, but with General Lee fighting in the Civil War, I would imagine it came somewhere in the mid-1800’s (The book it is found in was published after his death). Our current military leaders need to listen to advice like this quote, get out and know the people they put in charge so they are better able to make decisions on who should and should not actually be leading.

Being at the right place, time, and uniform displays discipline and supports the team. The consequences are more significant than the rewards. It can either make everything very simple, smooth, and efficient when you fulfill your duties. It will hinder, and remove other soldiers from a mission when one fails to uphold their responsibilities. The responsibility of attendance and proper attire is not difficult nor complicated. Communication is also a key part that supports the efficiency of the two. It is the responsibility of a soldier to ensure they are adhering to their leaders guidance.
