Social Media and the internet play as both an enemy and an ally in combating new diseases. In the article Fear, Misinformation, and Social Media Complicate Ebola Fight, it states that “If a piece of information is highly surprising or comes from a trusted source, experts say people are more likely to spread it.” Whether or not a piece of information is true or false, it is likely to be spread by people. According to the article, “[In reference to Ebola] mentions of the virus on Twitter leapt from about 100 per minute to more than 6,000...” Consequently, sharing the information on new diseases could be advantageous or detrimental, it just depends on what information is being spread.
Social media can be multifarious and beneficial in numbers ways, allowing people to connect and share ideas, as well as accessing information that would otherwise be difficult or delayed to obtain, such as pre-internet. The internet has grown in a way that perhaps most did not expect; however, this phenomenon has become part of our daily life both positive and negative. Culturally we are hooked on social media; therefore, the information we obtained is usually through news platforms via internet, because social media is so easily accessible, anyone can report false news information.
First, Social media can be very informative with what is going on with the news. I know personally when I wake up the first thing I do is check my Instagram. One morning when I logged on, I saw all the celebrities I was following saying prayers for Las Vegas. There was a shooting in Las Vegas that left 59 victims dead and many others injured. I check apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to get my news for the day and stay up to date on what is going on around me. This is a great of example of why I think social media can be used in a positive way also. By celebrities posting pictures saying prayers for Las Vegas this makes people curious of what happen, which then makes them want to google the incident. Since these celebrities use
Cited by Shari Veil, in her 2011 article, “Incorporating Social Media in Risk and Crisis Communication,” “Social media is at its core human communication, possessing characteristics of participation, openness, conversation, community, and connectedness.” This demonstrates how integral social media has become in our daily communication.
In our day and age, social media has become a huge platform for the sharing of information. The downside to this is the fact that the information
First and foremost, social media can be great health surveillance to the public since it often complement the information gathered by the professionals that provides a better understanding on healthcare and diseases. As what Gary W. Lawson mentions in his article, "social media plays a vital role during a health crisis because people are in search of the cure, the signs of symptoms, management, and all other information that they can learn to be better informed about a specific disease”. This set of online communication helps in not only encouraging healthy lifestyle, but it also function as a medium in providing information in the risk of a particular disease and steps of prevention. “The advantages include lightening- fast dissemination of knowledge and the ability to discuss and debate issues pertinent to education, practice, and research on a worldwide stage.” (Stokowski). Social media allows all professionals in the healthcare field to connect and communicate with no worries of their locations. Social media has far more advantages than disadvantages for the healthcare community but, the disadvantages are extremely serious. If social media is not used carefully and monitored closely it can become a very negative place with serious
Approximately 3.6 billion people have access to mobile devices, however only forty percent have access to the internet with their mobile device. Social media impacts information sharing and can help spread correct information during problematic times of rumors during health care crisis and health event. Public health may use social media as a tool to disseminate time sensitive information related to health. Social media can be a two way street and allows non-experts to share information as well. An example was the misinformation given during the Ebola crisis in 2014. The issue with Ebola was public health did respond in a timely manner causing the spread of rumors during this event which cause public panic (Huffington Post, 2018). It is important for public health to be ready for crisis with ways to get the appropriate message to staff volunteers and
Social media has opened the door to so many things that we never would have imagined. Working in the nursing field I have been exposed to situations I would have never thought possible. A woman left her husband because he was abusive and she was afraid for her life. Her daughter attended one of her school friend’s birthday party and the child’s mother not thinking anything of it she posted the picture on Facebook. The husband did have a Facebook page but his sister did and she saw the picture and informed her brother where the child was.
All of which appears during the film that collective behavior, crowd psychology, bafflement, helplessness, outrage, conspiracy, and disclosure of a pandemic outbreak could in fact occur in today’s society. Although the opposite occurred in the film of the roles of local and state health officials, they are normally at the front line of defense during an outbreak. In addition, communication among all organizations in the film and in real life is critical. In this instance, communication, aided in the treatment, vaccination processes, research and scientific approaches, and solutions for public, healthcare, and government organizations to successfully put into place isolation and quarantine
Since we are given these incredible tools to communicate, we need to use them. An example of a time that social media was used for good was last year when the Stop Kony campaign was trending on twitter. At it’s most popular time, #StopKony was tweeted more 1200 times a minute. The Stop Kony marketing team created a video as an experiment, having no idea that they would change the
Ellison and boyd describe social network sites as being first a communication platform, and second a shared content platform. In recent years, social media has been used as a tool to inform the public of important community issues and initiate change. Users have taken advantage of the one to many feature present in most social network sites. Social media give these messages the ability to reach local and global audiences “more widely than was ever historically possible” (Baym 11). A few years ago I started to see my friends sharing GoFundMe pages on Facebook and Twitter. GoFundMe pages are do-it-yourself fundraising sites developed specifically to utilize the sharing capability of social media sites. I have friends who have created pages to
“Social networks are successful because they offer widespread participation, but at the same time, they open their users up to unnecessarily dangerous exposure.” (Herring, Mark Y.. Social Media and the Good Life: Do They Connect? Jefferson NC: McFarland, 2015. ProQuest ebrary. Web. 10 September 2016.). Social media (sometimes defined as social network/networks) can be used to promote your ideas. Promoting your ideas through social media is a great way your voice to be heard by millions of other users using the same social media you use every day. Promoting may get you discovered by celebrities/authors/people who are looking for good marketing. However, some ideas/opinions you choose to express may cause an uproar of cyberbullying and may cause negative attention to be directed towards you, which nobody wants to deal with. Communication is also a great advantage that social media
Many people use social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to share information on numerous topics, ranging from politics, sports, and personal stories. This information has been collected and analyzed by researchers for market prediction, mining the opinions, etc. One of the most important properties of social platforms is that they allow people to communicate in real-time. During a crisis or a natural disaster, people on social media tend to easily believe contents of postings related to the events, and Re-tweet the postings with hoping them to be reached to many other users. There are both sides positive and negative to sharing information related to emergency situations on social media. People are well-informed about the situation in real-time, and most of this information is true, or believed to be true.
This is not surprising, as citizens sharing information can often provide greater insight than officials themselves. For example, during Korea’s recent epidemic of foot and mouth disease, people using social networks compiled a national map of mass culling of livestock early this year.
Twitter provides free APIs from which a sampled view can be easily obtained. It helps build a map spread model. In line with this, the researchers came up with an idea of working on a research using these Twitter data, focusing on the so-called “tweets” regarding diseases and health, specifically, the flu or influenza.
