In today’s time, with the advent of new health-care bills and peaked interest in personal well being, Americans are now anxious to determine for themselves what they need to maintain their own and their loved ones’ health. It is important for everyone to become aware of their own values and beliefs, especially those who are part of the medical field. As a nurse there will be times when others ethics don’t match up with yours. I have looked into what professional issues may create a potential conflict with my own personal values and beliefs while in nursing practice. I would like to work with pediatrics at some point in my nursing career, so the question of whether or not you should vaccinate your child is a common dilemma among parents, or guardians. Based on my personal values and beliefs, I think the answer to that question should be an easy yes.

Humans, as we are today, can thank many genetic and medical advances for each day lived on this planet. Creatures and humans alike have evolved for many years in many ways. In modern day, vaccinations are the reason why many people are not dying from simple diseases and viruses such as the flu, however, evolution and genetics mean vaccinations are not always needed to enjoy a long and prosperous life.

Before the opportunity should arise for someone to get sick, it is advised by many to get their regular vaccinations. The vaccinations contain antibiotics which can prevent invading viruses from doing any damage. The vaccinations also eliminate future viruses and teaches the host’s cell’s how to combat. There is always going to be arguments over if vaccinations are good or bad.

This article discusses the much debated concept of whether vaccines are correlated to causing autism. The controversy began in 1998 when a MMR vaccine – used to fight measles, mumps and rubella in children – was linked by a fraudulent research paper to disorders related to autism (Bearman 2010). As a result of the claims of the paper, there was a sharp drop in vaccination rates where the research was first originally reported – in the UK and in Ireland (Bearman 2010). As a result, there was a significant increase in the occurrence of measles and mumps, resulting in significant casualties as well as significant permanent injuries (Bearman 2010). Subsequently, a variety of research institutions have undergone significant testing of this “hypothesis” and have concluded there is no link between the MMR vaccine and autism.

There are many facts to consider for a new parent when deciding to vaccinate or not. First one would need to consider the benefits of receiving vaccinations, such as the prevention of serious childhood and even adulthood illnesses. These illnesses could lead to other complications such as seizures or even death. Also one would need to consider the side effects such as behavioral issues and even death from receiving vaccinations. It is especially imperative for parents of newborn children to be educated in this decision. This is because without vaccines a newborn child could die from serious illnesses. On the other hand, a newborn child could also die from complications from vaccines as well. In order to make an educated decision whether to vaccinate or not, one would need to weigh out the pros and cons. Vaccines are one of the most debated topics in today’s society. Ever since the first smallpox vaccine there has been controversy over the ethics and safety of it. However, vaccines have helped people in many ways when it comes to their health. But, are they actually harmful? Are we being lied to, or is all this just a scare?

Vaccinations have been and still are a point of contention, causing a lot of parents to debate whether children should be immunized or not. Why are schools making parents do things they aren’t comfortable with ? Thousands of schools in america that are not allowing children to go to school unless they have up to date vaccinations. Even though 1 in 10 americans don’t believe in getting/ giving their children vaccinations. That isn’t stopping schools from requiring students to have them. Parents over the past couple of years have gone against their children getting vacations because of them getting sick right after. Even parents of children with life threatening illnesses are going against vaccinations as well.

Vaccines are safe to the human body although there are dangerous and concerning ingredients. the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) carefully monitors and tests the ingredients to ensure the safest vaccine.The ingredients in vaccines are tested to be safe in the quantities used. As reported by the CDC, vaccine ingredients such as thimerosal, formaldehyde, and aluminum can harm one only in large amounts of doses (Vaccines and Immunizations). The CDC notes that, “people are exposed to more bacteria, viruses, toxins, and other harmful substances in one day of normal activity than are in vaccines” (Vaccines and Immunizations). Discussing the concerns of the public about the ingredients, the CDC commented, “[t]he FDA requires up to 10 or more years of testing for all vaccines before they are licensed, and then they are monitored by the CDC and the FDA to make sure the vaccines and the ingredients used in the vaccines are safe” (Should Vaccines Be Required). Vaccines are tested to the highest standard of safety. They are carefully evaluated with the help of many programs to reassure safety.

On January 1, 2016, the state of California passed a law that requires every student entering into a public school, charter school, and private school would need a vaccination too enroll (EdSource, 2016). Understanding this law and how it affects school children is important. This information is important to school officials with enforcing the California State Vaccination Laws before enrollment. Deciphering why some parents feel vaccinations are safe, and others find vaccinations dangerous and deadly but the state of California had the final decision.

Immunizations are recognized as a standard process for securing the health of children attending daycare and public school. Additionally, the recommend vaccination schedule set forth by the U.S. Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) protects “young children (age 6 years and under) against 14 pathogens and strives to protect children at the youngest age necessary to shield them from diseases when they are most vulnerable” (U.S.IOM, 2013, p.1). Notably, in the U.S., immunization programs have brought about the eradication of smallpox, the purging of polio, and near elimination of life-threatening diseases to include mumps, measles, pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus, and rubella (Maglione et al., 2014). Alongside the advantages of widespread immunization, over the last 15 years controversy against vaccination policy has been mounting, a controversy that has now made entry into the State of Evergreen; specifically, the counties of Cedar, Fir, and Pine.

Parents are always challenged with the question, to vaccinate their child or not? Some might say it is one of the most stressful questions they might have to ask themselves after becoming a parent. A possible reason most parents struggle with deciding to vaccinate their child or not: they face the fear whether their child might get diagnosed with Autism when they are vaccinated. There also lies the fear that children might acquire those deadly and harmful viruses that are injected into their immune system. Generally, most people believe that vaccines should be enforced to receive worldwide; as in, kids should not be able to enter schools until they have proof that they were vaccinated. Just like how dogs are supposed to receive shots to prevent rabies, every human should keep up with all of their shots in order to prevent terrible diseases to make a comeback globally. Vaccines should become mandatory because they are known to increase life expectancy worldwide, they prevent the spread of deadly viruses and diseases, and the consequences outweigh the slim risks that could be caused.
