During the Medieval period in art history, most artwork was created with a prime focus on the spiritual world and symbology. Favoring symbolism over realism, Medieval artists, especially painters, predominantly designed their works in the Byzantine manner—identified by an emphasis on rigidity, hierarchy-of-scale, compact linear flatness and frontality, and idealistic character emotions.
