Emotions In Art Spiegelman's Maus

It is well established that propaganda is a very effective way to change the opinions of the masses. Maus is a form of propaganda because it tries to convince the author of the horrid reality that was the holocaust. The graphic novel does this by effectively through showing the inhuman behavior of the Nazis. One such example of this brutal rendition of the Holocaust and the Nazi atrocities was the extensive violence and gruesome scenes and imagery used. These horrifying images are not natural images for humans to visualize and accept and because of this they allow for Maus to change the opinion of the readers. One vivid example of this was in the heart of the story when the Nazi soldiers gruesomely slam babies against a wall. (Pg.108) The unsanctioned murder of children was done simply to silence their screams. This inhumane display of brutality is a horrifying thing for readers to realize, however, it is effective in supporting the notion that events such as the Holocaust should never occur in the future. This is a major reason why Maus is very effective propaganda.

Spiegelman’s Maus is a graphic novel which explores events of the holocaust and the uniting of a father and son. Though often overlooked the dedications play an integral role in better understanding the text. The dedications do not influence the meaning of the book but do reinforce events in the book. Spiegelman dedicates the first book to his mother as an attempt to rid himself of the guilt associated with his mother’s suicide. In an attempt to not have the same short comings as his father, Art associates his most prized work with the most prized people in his life. Richieu is often disregarded in the book however he is vital in Spiegelman’s eyes. The book in its entirety is highly important as it is a dedication to a whole race.

After the Holocaust on May 8th, 1945, a book called Maus was released which is revolved around survival. The author, Art Spiegelman intended the story was to reflect upon his past and express his feelings world how he had to deal life was at the time.The book is a story of Art’s father named Vladek, he tells his point-of-view to the world to show multiple struggles he had to withstand. The theme of Art Spiegelman’s book Maus is survival; Art Spiegelman shows the theme of survival by using tone, mood, and point-of-view throughout the graphic novel. Vladek is the main character of Maus and shares his point of view. Vladek tells a true story about how he survived the Holocaust and the things he had to accomplish to make it through alive. This book is based on a true story of what had happened during the Holocaust.

Anja’s depression affected her life and the Holocaust, and losing her son made it even worse. She decided she no longer wanted to live and committed suicide. Mental illness is real; people who lived through the Holocaust were majorly affected, and the characters in this story are a representation of survivors as well as mental illness effects. Artie uses the characters’ issues to address mental health issues. The characters become a symbol of their illnesses.

Certain relationships cannot be fixed because of irreconcilable differences. Art Spiegelman's graphic novels Maus I and Maus II retell the stories of the Holocaust through the eyes of Art’s father, Vladek. However, the novel includes a subplot of Art’s poor relationship with his father, and how they never seem to come to coincide. Vladek and Art misunderstand each other because they have had very different experiences. In addition, their relationship is distant and contentious because they cannot cope with one another. Vladek and Art’s relationship is inadequate because they cannot be of one mind.

Toward the beginning of book, Artie touches base at his father, Vladek’s home keeping in mind that his goal is to record his dad’s Holocaust recollections for a book he is writing. Artie’s mother died from suicide and as Artie was going through with her funeral. Artie and Vladek enter a dark and depressing phase, Artie lets his feelings out by drawing it out and making a comic. As the reader, it shows how effortlessly it is to find out about the amount Arties endured amid this time of his life. In a way it speaks to his parents hardships during the holocaust as his dad had explained to him through the book. It discovered a lot of opinions and how painful to his father as he reads it, and Mala purposely keeping this comic.

The holocaust has effected more lives than anybody could imagine, the tragedy has not only affected those who were there or primarily affected but those of every generation to come after that. Art’s choice to include a 2-page prologue before the beginning of the book proper helps to very clearly illustrate the relationship that Art and Vladek have had up until the beginning of the book. Art is abandoned by his friends, and his father attempts to comfort him, however this appears to Art, and therefore the reader, as more of a comparison between Vladek’s experiences during the holocaust and Art’s childhood suffering, especially with the mention of “no food for a week”, which Art has utilised to create a sense of emotional distance, of an incompatibility between the two.

In “The Shawl”, Cynthia Ozick uses vivid details throughout the story to engage the reader. The story portrays the hard times Jews had during the Holocaust in a concentration camp consisting of three main characters: Rosa, Stella, and Magda who are trying to survive the horror of Nazism through a magical shawl. Rosa is the mother of Magda, a fifteen month baby and the aunt of Stella, a fourteen year old girl. The shawl is the only thing keeping them alive throughout the story and at the end it leads them to their death. The author’s use of symbolism is very significant to the story. Cynthia Ozick use of symbolism helps the reader visualize the setting by using symbols to convey different meanings and understand how these symbols characterize the experience of the holocaust survivors.

The graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman conveys many varied and powerful themes to the reader. Spiegelman has conveyed the themes Guilt and Survival by using various methods including narration, dialogue and several comic book techniques to show the expressions and feelings of the central characters. Guilt is an especially strong theme in Maus, appearing many times with Art and Vladek. Survival is another primary theme in Maus. Images are used by Spiegelman to display the ways that Vladek survived during the Holocaust.
