Continuing Personal and Professional Development
Task 1:
The role of a teacher has changed considerably over the years in the past the teacher may have been perceived as being the fountain of all knowledge and the purveyor of information. I would like to think we are still the fountain of all knowledge but the way we deliver our courses has changed considerably. We no longer stand at the front of the class with rows and rows of learners sitting waiting for us to transmit the information to them.
As a teacher we are now the facilitator of knowledge. Our job is to guide the learners and allow them to take responsibility for there own learning. We are less likely to have students in rows in front of us and more likely to have

Abstract conceptualization is when we come to a decision about what we would do differently next time. The way we would come to a decision is through further studying or staff development and reading the right literature.
Active experimentation is the conclusion of our abstract conceptualization stage and provides the platform that we can plan our changes. Once we have administered these changes we can then start the cycle again and have some new concrete experiences.
Kolb also described how Lewin’s action research and T-group training in laboratories was influenced by the concept of feedback that was used by electrical engineers. This feedback process involved concrete experience; observations and reflections; formation of abstract concepts and generalizations; and testing implications of concepts in new situations . The similarities with Kolb’s learning cycle (Beard, Colin; Wilson, John P.. Experiential Learning p.32)
One of the things that first brought my attention to this book was that I was looking for some inspiration on reflective practices in engineering which is my field and it’s for this reason that I discovered this section.
Gibbs Reflective Cycle
Professor Graham Gibbs has came illustrated his six stage cycle of reflection. In order for learning to take place Gibbs believes that the cycle below must be completed.
1. What new concepts or theories have you learned about after completing this lab activity?
In addition, the teacher is responsible for researching the subject area to ensure a wide, current knowledge base that will help when establishing credibility and professionalism, and then to develop a variety of interesting ways to deliver the content whilst ensuring a safe working environment for students. The teacher’s role is then to deliver the lesson content in a manner consistent with the learning styles and requirements of the delegates. These might include lecturing, large group discussion or case studies.
The main role of a teacher/trainer should be to teach in a way which engages learners and actively engage learning during every lesson irrespective of the environment. In my position as IT manager at Barnsley College there are roles and responsibilities that are set to facilitate personal and organisational goals the same can be said for teaching and learning. As a teacher/trainer I will need to be able to adapt my style of teaching by being a friend, counsellor, mentor to ensure that my learners are
You are expected to apply a reflective framework of your choice and support your reflection with appropriate references.
“Reflective learning involves assessment and re-assessment of assumptions and critical reflective occurs whenever underlying premises are being questioned”.(Williams 2001) P.29.
As a teacher I will be allowed to pass on knowledge and skills that are essential for individuals
Reflection is described as a way of reviewing experiences from practice so that it can be described and analysed and used to change future practice (Bulman and Schutz, 2004).
The role of a teacher is to make sure that tutorials are carried out and communicated effectively and appropriately with learners and that it conforms to professional codes of conduct, functional skills are completed, ground rules are established and all the requirements of awarding bodies are followed. They have to maintain a safe and supportive role in the learning environment and promote
Reflective practice helps workers think about how they could change their way of working – or should change their way of working by thinking ahead and using a structure to suit an activity.
In order to help me with my reflection I have chosen Gibbs (1988), as the model to help with my reflective process. This model comprises of a process that helps the individual look at a situation and think about their thoughts and feelings.
Reflection should become integral to these sessions. Concrete Experience Concerned with something that has happened to you or that you have done. Concerned with adopting your new ideas into practice.
In the practice of teaching, it is the responsibility of a teacher not only to teach students subject matter, but to teach students in order to enable them to grow and develop as a person. While it is essential for students to have an understanding of academic material, it is also equally as important that when students finish their education they have skills to use in
Gibbs’ reflective cycle is a theoretical model often used by students as a framework in coursework
The role of the teacher these days is completely different from their roles in the past. They used to teach only and to be told what to teach. These days, the teachers help the students develop their own skills and encourage them to develop their information and challenge them to learn.
I have not been able to map this last step of Kolb’s cycle with a simulation experience as it happens post-simulation. Active experimentation is the testing of the new knowledge acquired during simulation against a real life experience. I personally see simulation like the platform for a rehearsed reality, like giving learners the opportunity to walk before they can run. For me, simulation is an opportunity to learn how to learn, to train one’s brain to stretch to new knowledge.
