The hypnotist induces a trance by slowly persuading the participant to relax and lose all interest in external distractions. The participant is not under the hypnotists control but can be convinced to do things that he or she would not normally do. However, anyone can resist hypnosis by refusing to open his or her mind to the hypnotist.

We will look at these in more detail to understand what changes might occur in the subject at each stage. The objective is, broadly speaking, to facilitate a trance-like state in the subject which enables easier access to the subconscious. After the therapy, there would typically be a period of reflection wherein the subject is encouraged to discuss how the therapy felt and what next steps they might take. A good salesman will use some of the techniques of a hypnotist. These are powerful techniques that augment your powers of persuasion. They must be used with utmost discretion. An example of how a hypnotherapy session might go like this; a therapist comes in while a patient was in an relaxed state and proceeds to tell the patient that they will be cured from their illness when they came out of the relaxed state and then the patient may or may not be cured.

After reading Chapter 5, I disagree with the use of hypnosis as a part of criminal investigations. In general, for me, I never believed in being put under any type of hypnosis. I prefer to be fully aware of my surroundings and whereabouts. I do not see a use for hypnosis in criminal investigations because a person can lie while under hypnosis and also fake being hypnotized. It is hard enough for interviewers to get individuals to be completely honest and open regularly so I can only imagine the type of deceitfulness hypnosis can open a criminal investigation up to.

In the twenty-first century our society has become sceptic on the controversial issue of hypnosis. Our society recognizes hypnosis as a foolish man holding a swinging stopwatch in front of people saying, "When I snap my fingers, you will feel sleepy". Our society does not recognize hypnosis as a way of therapy or treatment. Hypnosis by definition is a trancelike state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily accepted by the subject.
