The Morality Of Artificial Intelligence

The future of AI will be able to solve many problems that have remained unanswered by mankind. These include balancing the Economy, dealing with climate change, getting to school on time, picking the right outfit,, and many more ways. This technology could drastically change the outlook of the future with the right steps taken. The AI in which we use today is not nearly as intelligent as we want it to be, its only a slight portion of what we hope to achieve and maintain. Many companies using AI are aware of how fast the technology is already growing, as we are decades ahead of what we anticipated. Some future features of artificial intelligence include humans being able to live side by side with robots and other machines to help make the world we live in easier. Purdy and Daugherty (2017) suggest that by 2035 AI could double annual economic growth. Also it could increase labor productivity by 40%. While we are plenty of ways far from this, it is still important to look into the world just outside ours. Another feature would include the AI to rewrite its own coding, causing it to only grow smarter and smarter. This has lead to many to ponder the true safety of Artificial Intelligence, what happens if it grows too smart and leaves human minds

AI likely will likely be the most significant event in human history. This can either go badly or catapult humans to unimaginable trans humanist heights warned Elon Musk. The launch of AI, expects most science and technology book to be completely rewritten with improved and complex ideas. I expect an era of learning and superior human lifestyles. The important thing, is to not allow AI to run wild, however, to already be part machines ourselves, so we will be able to plug into it wherever it leads. Whatever happens next, in spite of everything, we don’t want to overlook the Singularity.

The term “Artificial Intelligence or AI” is no longer an obscure term to us. Being surrounded by smart and intelligent devices in our everyday life has made us aware about this technical jargon called “Artificial Intelligence or AI”, which is used to refer to machine intelligence in the field of Computer Science. As artificial intelligence continues to progress, machines are becoming smarter and more efficient than human beings. So, people are getting more concerned and apprehensive regarding their jobs after witnessing their jobs being replaced by robots and machines. Artificial Intelligence replacing human jobs frequently gets media attention and it has been made a huge deal even though it is not. AI gradually taking all our jobs and destroying the economic system is just an absurd and exaggerated claim made by few media outlets and self-proclaimed tech pundits. On the contrary, AI has potential to help us to get better at our jobs and create more job opportunities in the long run.

Artificial intelligence pertains to the ability of digital computers or computer-controlled robots to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings, such as humans. Since the mid-20th century, scientists have attempted to develop a system capable of carrying out tasks perceived as requiring human intelligence which includes natural language understanding, fault diagnosis, and supplying expert advice ("Artificial Intelligence(ai)," 2011, n.p.). Although many people, particularly workers within the , are concerned about the effects of artificial intelligence, the capabilities of these machines can benefit society in a multitude of ways ("Artificial Intelligence(ai)," 2011, n.p.). According to Obama, in a speech in Pittsburgh during the 2011 the Robotics Initiative, “Revolutions in technology have transformed the way we live and the way we work,” (Executive Office, 2016). This is in fact true since AI has already begun to have reaping major benefits to the public in fields as diverse as health care, criminal justice, and also the education of individuals which will ultimately revolutionize society (Executive Office, 2016).

When mentioning artificial intelligence or robots, a lot of people will easily think the convenience that they provide since the advantages of artificial intelligence are numerous such as doing dangerous and complex task for human. However, some people believe the risks are existing when scientists continue developing. Harlan Ellison, one of these people, uses a fiction story, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, to describe vividly how supercomputers harm human’s personality and life. Also many artificial intelligence experts clearly state human-level artificial intelligence may cause human extinction and provides some methods to prevent.

In discussions of Artificial Intelligence, one controversial issue has been argued that it is taking over the lives of people everywhere. In articles such as; “As Robots Replace Old Jobs, New Jobs Should Be Invented” by Garry Kasparov, “If A.I. Replaces Humans, Will Siri Lead Us Into the Sea?” by Susan Bennett, and “Well-Intentioned Uses of Technology Can Go Wrong” by Joi Ito all agree that it is taking over our lives. On the other hand, people like Nnedi Okorafor in her article “Robots Are Making Roads Safer and Less Congested in Africa”, Faith Popcorn in her article “Artificial Intelligence May Usher in a New Golden Age”, and Shauna Mei in her article “A.I. Can Help Us Make Quicker, Better Consumer Choices” all disagree by stating that it

Allison Berke, in her article “Future of Artificial Intelligence,” ponders the future of artificial intelligence based on the writings of several well known specialists.

I chose to watch this TED Talk done by Sam Harris because the topic is one that was interesting to me. He is a neuroscientist and philosopher and the purpose of this speech was to bring awareness to people about the potential dangers we could face with artificial intelligence in the future. He talks about how as we keep progressing and creating better technology we will eventually create artificial intelligence that will surpass us, and likely destroy our society. He goes into a few different ways this could happen, and asks his audience to try to think more about the subject and how we can prevent our destruction.

There are many interpretations of Artificial intelligence. Merriam Webster’s online dictionary defines artificial intelligence as “A branch of computer science, dealing with the simulation of intelligent behaviour, in computers or the capability of a machine, to imitate intelligent human behaviour” (Artificial Intelligence, 1828). With technology continually progressing and embedding itself into today’s population, from Siri on iPhone, voice active web search on Google and self-driving cars by Tesla to Virtual intelligence (V.I.) and Artificial intelligence (A.I.) programs and experiments, through government or private research agencies [Facebook, Machine Intelligence Research Institute, (MIRI) and Future of Humanity Institute (FHI)], it won’t be long until artificial intelligence becomes the next best thing. But, will it? There are many concerns that arise with the implementation of artificial intelligence within society. This essay will present the arguments for and against, artificial intelligence development and introduction, within society. For the purpose of this essay, fields that impact or have a bearing on this decision in areas like military and ethics, health and social prospects, economics and job outlook, as well as the advantages and disadvantages it poses to humanity are examined.

Artificial intelligence robots may be the next step in human evolution, however it will be the downfall of mankind and its society. Despite the hype around the new machinery, robots do not function in the same sense that a human does. Artificial intelligence lacks the humanity and compassion of a human, will cause unemployment rates to go through the roof, and is overall an inconvenience to support. If the new technology is implemented into school systems, the negatives will overpower all (if any) positives.

There was a huge turnout of speakers, including AI specialists Peter Voss and Monica Anderson, New York University educator Gary Marcus, science fiction author Nicole Sallak Anderson, and futurist Scott Jackisch. We were all fascinated in how the introduction of artificial intelligence will impact the world.

With any major advancement in technology, we must prepare for change. The world changed when cellular phones were introduced, as people became more connected to one another through instantaneous calls and small text messages. The introduction and widespread use of the personal computer made information indefinitely more accessible, change how we learn and communicate as a society. The evolution of the iPhone throughout the 2000's has impacted the world in ways previously unimaginable. Artificial intelligence may be what is next for our society to adopt. Many do not realize is how close we are do actually having to confront the issue head on; experts say that as early as 2030 we could begin to experience the integration of artificial intelligence into our everyday lives (Future of Life Institute). Artificial intelligence, however, brings more than some new ways of communication or academic pursuits, like other technologies we have seen before; artificial intelligence has the power to change how our entire species acts as another, possibly more supreme, sentient species enters our world. The very nature of artificial intelligence is controversial- will artificial intelligence take over our society? Who will regulate their species? What decides what artificial intelligence are and are not allowed to do? These, and a multitude of other questions, stem from one main idea: do we award artificial intelligence civil rights? This is a question that plagues technology experts and

Harari has deemed artificial intelligence to be the “rise of the useless class,” and has spoken about AI in both of his books, Sapiens and Homo Deus. He has addressed his views of humans not being dominate on Earth in 300 years, and even warned about the future uprising of AI. Furthermore, in our classroom discussion about autonomous cars, and even in some solo presentations, the topic of artificial intelligence was brought up and pondered. Since these discussions, it has been a curiosity of mine to do further research into how far artificial intelligence can go, and what it can do for society. Artificial intelligence is becoming more and more present in the new technologies and products to hit the market. From Siri on Apple devices, a personal assistant available at any time needed, to the new Amazon Alexa speakers that can be prompted by voice command. Technology is getting smarter; where will it go, and how will it end?

The idea of Artificial Intelligence is a widely discussed topic, mostly filled with propaganda, in an Information Technology ruled society like ours today. As said by Christof Koch, president and chief scientific officer of the Allen institute for Brain Science in Seattle: “Within a decade these instances of ‘weak’ or ‘narrow’ AI—able to replicate specific human tasks—will permeate society. Siri is only the beginning. Driverless cars and trucks will become the norm, and our interactions in supermarkets, hospitals, industry, offices and financial markets will be dominated by narrow AI.” [1] (Christof) But with increases in technologies like facial recognition, algorithms that can teach themselves and chips that can be embedded to let normal vehicles drive autonomously, have we allowed computer to even be smarter than that of its creators? Given that technology does continue to effortlessly increase in aptitude and prominence, it will one day become more troublesome than helpful. If we were to one day create humanoids that are able to think for themselves or cars that were able to completely drive themselves, without the input of a human, this brings about an entire moral problem in and of itself. As we continue to create intelligent and eventually sentient technology that no longer relies on our human presence, the effect it could have on our culture as we know it could become catastrophic.
