Are People Responsible For Romeo And Juliet's Death?

The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is a book of fate and how everyone in the world affects the happenings of this world. The author of this extraordinary book is William Shakespeare. Although Romeo and Juliet killed themselves, there were many people responsible for their deaths. It is arguable that the parents of the two lovers, Friar Laurence, and Romeo and Juliet themselves were the most responsible, some could say that the other main characters like Mercutio, Benvolio, Tybalt, the Nurse, and Paris were involved as well. There were many people responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, although they took their own lives, they were not all to blame.

Friar Lawrence plays a big part in causing the death of Romeo and Juliet because he secretly marries them knowing something either negative or positive will happen. Friar even tells Romeo the cautions for he says 'Wisely and slow. They stumble that run fast.' (Act II Scene III 97) Friar marries them because he thinks that the marriage is going to end the feud between the families of Romeo and Juliet. He knows that even though Romeo and Juliet are in love they will never be able to see each other. Not in a grave to lay one in, another out to have” (Act II scene III 85) Also, if Friar Lawrence did not give Juliet the potion that she was going to use to deceive her family into thinking she was dead to get out of her marriage to Paris and make Romeo aware of what was going to happen, their deaths would not have occurred. Romeo goes to the tomb thinking Juliet is really dead after Balthasar accidently informed him of Juliet’s apparent death not knowing of her plan. If he had stayed there longer without taking the poison he had obtained from Apothecary they both would not have killed themselves. He brought the poison to the tomb to end his own life next to Juliet after seeing for himself if she was really dead. Romeo did not want to live without Juliet.

Recently we have read the renown tragic play of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. As we all know, this tragedy ends by the untimely death of Juliet and her Romeo. But after putting down the book, a question comes to mind: who is truly at fault for the death of those two teenagers? Who is truly responsible for turning this story into a tragedy? Or is anyone even guilty at all? After some reflection, I have come to the conclusion that nobody is really at fault, but that everybody did a little something and that all those little somethings added up to create a big something, the death of the two protagonists. Yet, if I had to choose the people who, although unintentionally, contributed to this tragic ending, I believe that Lord Capulet and Benvolio are the most to blame, for their lack of sentiments and betrayals.

The Friar isn't the cause of Romeo and Juliet's death because when Romeo meets with the Friar and asks him to marry him and Juliet, the Friar clearly emphasizes to Romeo saying “For this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households’ rancor to pure love” (II.iii.91-92). The Friar is telling Romeo that he is only going to marry him and Juliet in hopes that their families will stop fighting. He never meant to do any harm but help the resolve the feud between the Montagues and Capulets. But that being said, only shows how the Friar caused the couple's death and did not prevent it. Instead of focusing on the true love between Romeo and Juliet, he decided to focus on what was bothering him. And in the quote above it precisely says that the Friar is trying to prove a point; that love can fix the family feud. But how does he know that Romeo and Juliet's love will be pure enough, when he barely even saw the couple together in one area. What causes people to believe in fate? Fate is like a powerful force that cannot be controlled by anyone. Romeo and Juliet, the two lovers were victims of fate or destiny. Romeo and Juliet saw each other, and they loved each other immediately after 5 minutes, but their families were enemies because they always fight with each other. Romeo and Juliet were victims of the environmental factors, the authority figures, and by their own mistakes. All of these are blamed for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths.

In the book Romeo and Juliet a feud between the Montagues and Capulets in a city called Verona Romeo and Juliet fall in love but are torn apart because of there family feud which leads to a chain of unfortunate event ultimately leading to their death. At first, Friar Lawrence questioned how Romeo could fall in love with a different person right after he was rejected from Rosaline, telling Romeo that men must fall in love through their eyes. Even though he frustrated Romeo, Friar Lawrence agreed to marry Romeo and Juliet together to bring peace between the Capulets and Montagues.
