Page 290 of the Norton readings explains that “the resource that enabled slaves to maintain such defiance was their culture: a body of beliefs, values, and practices born of their past and maintained in the present.” Page 295 of the Norton readings discusses instances of resistance in slaves. Speaking to an audience of hundreds of people sounds terrifying to me, however, it is this precise reason why I think I would make a great speaker. Throughout my academic career, I have always loathed presenting because I am naturally more reserved and in some cases, I am a shy person. I find myself not taking advantage of speaking in classes because I prefer having my thoughts prepared in advance so that I am clear and able to defend my arguments. I have not had a bad experience presenting yet, and I attribute this to careful preparation. Furthermore, I believe my idea is worth spreading because of its timeliness and potential to impact today’s society. I take pride in all the work I put in leading up to the presentation and the opportunity to have the audience’s attention.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, slaves had to endure a great deal of hardship. It was tough, but some slaves had a better life than others. It depended on the masters and what relationship the slaves had with them. Some masters were kind to their slaves so that they would receive loyalty in return. Other masters weren’t so nice; they operated by a vicious system that attacked their slaves and gave them terrible working conditions. However, where they lived, the time that they lived in, and the specific job they had also determined whether they had a good or bad life experience.

Primarily, it can be difficult to understand the life of the slaves without a full description of what they where categories as. One example that identified the meaning of slaves was In Hubers essay: “As slaves were forbidden to speak their own languages or practice their own religions, they began to mix their native cultures with the European and Native American cultures that existed in America, and, through the English language, they found new ways of entertaining, educating, and expressing themselves.”(1 Huber) Slaves had no other chose that to conform to the life that they were part of and a result they combined their culture with the one of their masters. It gives an understanding of way they coped with the hardships they have encounter, forms to make their life a little lest tragic. In volume one, To Make A World Anew, a section title Breaking the Bonds, describe several acts of resistance by slaves. They range in matter of intensity which the book describes as “calculated and spontaneous, covert and direct, phycological and physical, etc…” With that said, these resistance were often associated with bravery and a will to defy an entire institution and with such determination, it was often met with consequences, if not carried out properly. The intended act has to be carefully planned, even if it was subtle because one mistake will cause misery on the perpetrator. Now if I were to ask you how you found out about fidget spinners, you might say from a friend, but think about this your friend probably got that exciting trend of the internet and where do you go to see all the latest trends probably YouTube and where would you find YouTube, you guessed it, on your phone. Today I’m going to talk about using your phones in class. You need to know that using your phones in class is unacceptable, using a phone to talk or text your friend, well I just can’t stand it, and don’t say you have never seen or even done it before because I know that at least 10 of you have used your phone in class. Because you all know that detention was last Tuesday.

The first speech I will be presenting is a Descriptive/Narrative speech. My top two topics I considered for this speech are two different experiences that have impacted my life. The first experience that came to mind when I began considering my topics was when I was 15 years old and had to help my oldest sister raise her one year old because she had placenta accrete, a condition that was life threatening to her and her unborn child during her second pregnancy. The second experience that came to mind was when I was 16 and had dislocated my knee during a cheerleading tryout. I had to have an extensive knee surgery and was required to attend physical therapy for over a year. My thoughts about the first experience is that many students can relate to the topic due to many of my peers and me having to step up to the plate sometimes and help our families through difficult situations or hardships. The second experience is extremely relatable to my peers, not because the injury was an inconvenience in my life, but it severely impacted my life for the best and worst.

Throughout the Cornerstone, students will learn about the various civil rights issues and movements of today. They will gain a wider and stronger understanding of their chosen civil rights issue (e.g., pay inequality, low representation in congress, racial profiling) while connecting it to their specific social media platform. Each civil rights social media campaign will be well-defined and described for viewers. Students will develop their civil rights issue in order to motivate and inspire a new chapter of activism. Students’ key understanding of today’s civil rights issues will be pivotal in their creation of an original social media campaign.

The Informative speech was the first speech that I ever came up with and I wanted the speech to be something memorable for me. I chose to talk about events in my community because my community is important to me. As I consider Mexico my home, I compared the events from my community to the ones in Mexico Guadalajara, Jalisco. I thought the prompt of the speech was easy for the fact that, the prompt was self-explanatory. The outline was also easy to understand because the outline included everything we as students had to do to fully develop the speech. The writing process of the speech was easy for me, as I knew what 3 main points, I wanted to write about. The only problem I had with writing my speech was that I did not know how to break each point apart. For example, my three main points were Jaripeo/Charreada, Tequila, and Mariachi, I did not know what to write for each point. One way that helped me develop my topic was by using ethical public speaking. According to the article, “ethics in public speaking” by Alyssa G. Millner and Rachel D. Price state, “Ethical public speaking is a process. This process begins when you begin brainstorming the topic of your speech” (3). Looking for sources, was a bit challenging at first, as most of them would be in Spanish. At the end the full development of my speech was good, now I just had to begin rehearsing for my deliberation.

Kenneth Stampp claimed that slaves inherently yearned for freedom and acted in many forms to show their discontent with their bondage. Slaves rebelled by faking illness or pregnancy in order to postpone work, feigned ignorance, purposely did careless work and damaged properties, stole from their masters, and ran away. Stampp used these instances to justify his claim that resistance was enacted by discontent. In cases where rebellion was not dealt by the slave owners themselves, crimes committed by slaves were considered a bigger offense than the same crime committed by a free white man (Stampp 267). In response, slaves developed their own code of laws rather than abiding by the government laws and their master’s rules. “Stealing, on the other hand, meant appropriating something that belonged to another slave, and this was an offense which slaves did not condone” (Stampp 268-9). By establishing a tacit understanding with each other, slaves established themselves as a body of “us” and pitted themselves against “them”, the slave owners. In extreme cases, slaves turned to self-sabotage, suicide, and homicide in order to rebel against their owners. The resistance was not entirely in response to mistreatment by their masters, but to express the desire to be free and independent. As said by former slave Frederick Douglass, “Beat and cuff your slave, keep him hungry and spiritless, and he will follow the chain of his master like a dog; but feed and clothe him well,—work
