Introduction
Any team or organisation that exists has specific goals or tasks that they need to accomplish or meet that are set by the shareholders. For the overall goals and tasks to be meet leaders are selected to aid in the meeting of the goals or tasks in those teams. Their main goal is to ensure that all the individual that make up that teams/organisation function in ways that meet the goal/tasks.
These different leaders use different leadership styles. Each style has its own place within an different organisations/teams.
This report focuses mainly on the Servant leadership style of leadership. Focusing what makes a servant leader, advantages and disadvantages of this style of leadership.
What is leadership?

Leadership styles:
Seen that the work place is made up of different individuals, this resulting in different types of leadership styles found in the work place. The leadership style of an organization is dependent on the goals, culture and tasks that exist within the organization as this helps identity what will fit into the existing culture, goals and tasks making it effective. According to Humphreys (2002), successful leaders do this by applying their leadership knowledge and skills. A good leadership is not only good at management, but also use different leadership styles in different situations. The two theories that I chose to do my self-assessment by are the authentic leadership theory and the servant leadership theory. The authentic leadership theory was chosen due to my desire to stay true to who I am and what I stand for. However, the servant leadership theory was chosen because of my desire to meet the needs of others while doing what I can to help others succeed as well as meet their set goals. Being a servant while being authentic are the traits I want in my style of leadership and are assessed throughout this paper along with my strengths and weaknesses in the area of leadership.
By definition a leader is a person who leads or commands a group however, I believe a leader should be a person who inspires his team excel in the worst of conditions. A leader should be extraordinary reliable as the team should know that the leader could guide them to the best of his abilities toward their goal. A leader should be persistent as they should be the motivational force leading the group. A leader should be patient and calm knowing that quality takes time and that the individual member of his team have obstacles to overcome on their own part.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.
Servant leadership is a type of leadership whereby the leader serves the needs of the people, empathizes with them, and involves them in solving their needs. Servant leadership is all about involving the people you are leading in your decision making, being ethical and caring for the people to enhance their personal growth at the same time improve their life. A servant leader does not simply delegate roles; he starts the work and energizes the others to join him and get the work done. According to Business Dictionary.com, leadership is defined as the individuals who are the leaders in an organization, regarded collectively. It also can be define as the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this. Leadership involves the establishing of a clear vision, sharing the vision with other so that they will follow willingly, providing the needed information, knowledge, and methods to realize the vision and coordinating and balancing the conflicts interests of all members and stakeholders.
There are many styles of leadership, as well as different types of leaders. Leaders can range from being someone who holds a position of power, such as President Barack Obama, or someone who can demand respect and has the ability to lead a group of people like Fletcher Christian in The Bounty. Many people would characterize the managers and heads of companies as capable leaders, or coaches of sports teams as leaders. Between the jobs and roles above, there are several different ways of leadership. Not every group responds the same to the different styles of leadership.
The styles today are less authoritative and more on trying to get feedback from co-workers. This change is driven by today’s individuals that want to be treated with respect and empowered to be self-driven. Today’s business environment requires managers to constantly evaluate his or her leadership style to maintain the so called competitive edge. In terms of leadership styles a wide variety exists for one to employ (Boykins, 2013). There isn’t firm consensus as to which styles prove to be the most effective. The objective of this paper is to analyze the review of literature on various leadership styles over the past years and how effective and ineffective different leadership styles are in the workplace.
