Samuel Rickards (1796–1865)

“HYMNS for Private Devotion for the Sundays and Saints’ Days throughout the Year,” by Samuel Rickards (1825), has supplied one or two hymns to subsequent collections, among which the Christmas hymn here quoted is the most notable. The author, Samuel Rickards, was born in 1796, and educated at Oriel College, Oxford, where he was Newdigate Prizeman in 1815, B.A. 1817, M.A. 1820. He was a Fellow of his college 1819 to 1823, and was contemporary with Newman, Keble, and other famous Churchmen. He was Curate of Ulcombe, 1825, and Rector of Stowlangtoft, Ely, 1832. He published, besides the “Hymns,” “The Christian Householder; or, Book of Family Prayers,” “A Parish Prayer Book,” “Short Sermons,” etc., and died on the 24th of August, 1865.
