Henry James Buckoll (1803–1871)

HENRY JAMES BUCKOLL (1803–1871) was educated at Rugby and Queen’s College, Oxford. Graduating in 1826, he became Assistant Master at Rugby. In 1839 he edited “A Collection of Hymns for the Rugby Parish Church,” and in 1850, with Dr. Goulburn, a new edition of the collection for the Rugby School Chapel, to which he contributed fourteen hymns. He also published “Hymns Translated from the German” (1842). This contained translations, sixty-seven in number, from Bunsen’s “Versuch.” The following text is taken from “The Christian Life: its Course, Hindrances, and its Helps” (1841), a volume of sermons preached in Rugby School Chapel by Dr. Arnold.
