This is the first simile in the Odyssey, and Chapman has made it very confused. The original is simply: “As when a hind, having laid her new-born suckling fawns in the den of a strong lion, searches out the lower parts of a hill (see …) and grassy vallies for food, but he then has entered his lair, &c.” Chapman, however, makes the lion hunting in the vales for food (deer) feeding there.
