An Epitaph: Like other things, this marble must decayWilliam Pierce
Intended for the monument of Major-General Greene
L
The cipher’d characters shall fade away,
And naught but ruin mark this sacred spot,
Where Greene’s interr’d—perhaps the place forgot;
But time, unmeasured, shall preserve his name,
Through distant ages shall roll on his fame,
And in the heart of every good man, raise
A lasting monument of matchless praise.
