William McCarty, comp. The American National Song Book. 1842.

To La Fayette

From the French

O, THOU young chief, Fayette, the good and brave,

Freedom’s firm friend beyond the Atlantic wave;

While Glory mentions, France repeats thy name;

And Time consigns it to immortal Fame!

Though spots the fame of our first heroes stain,

Since, chaining foes, they riveted our chain;

Yet Fayette breaks oppression’s iron rod,

A patriot deem’d, thence grows a demigod.
