Respectfully Quoted: A Dictionary of Quotations. 1989.

NUMBER: 1466
AUTHOR: Saint Francis (1182?–1226)
QUOTATION: Lord, make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me bring love.
Where there is offense, forgiveness.
Where there is discord, reconciliation.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is sadness, joy.
Where there is darkness, your light.
If we give, we are made rich.
If we forget ourselves, we find peace.
If we forgive, we receive forgiveness.
If we die, we receive eternal resurrection.
Give us peace, Lord.
ATTRIBUTION: Attributed to ST. FRANCIS of Assisi.—Auspicius van Corstanje, Francis: Bible of the Poor, p. 203 (1977).

“This prayer cannot be found in any of the early texts written by Francis. In its present form, it is probably not even a hundred years old. All the same, it clearly reflects the spirit of Francis. He could have written it, and that is why it is generally attributed to him” (p. 203). A slightly different version (“Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace”) can be found in Masterpieces of Religious Verse, ed. James Dalton Morrison, p. 130 (1948).
