Nuptial Night

By Donald Evans (1884–1921)

(From Discords, 1911)

WE are alone; the marriage-knot is fast;
  The door is closed against the world outside.
Nothing now stands between me and my bride,
The fatal, fruitful midnight comes at last.
We grope toward a kiss; escape is past,        5
  But for a moment may we still abide
  Possessed of our own souls, and then love’s tide
Sweeps us to seaward strangled and aghast.
