Mount Pleasant
By Hannah E. M. Allen (Rose Sanborn) (b. 1831)’T
Aflame with sunset’s colored light.
Transfigured stood with crowns of gold.
When the tide of glory was at its flood.
The delicate harebell, sweetly smiled,
From seam and rift where the mosses grew.
Whitened the dry, crisp grass below;
Through clumps of starry asters glowed,
Tangled hazels of tawny hue.
Where the maple’s green was dashed with blood;
And the ash was sad in a purple gown,
The sombre spruces, darkly green.
The small lake lay, a picture sheet,
Glowed in a setting of dark old pine.
One with a crest of glittering snows,—
And lakes transfused with the sunset sheen.
