Charming Gabrielle

By Henri IV. (1553–1610)

Translated by Louisa Stuart Costello

MY charming Gabrielle!

My heart is pierced with woe,

When glory sounds her knell,

And forth to war I go.

Parting, perchance our last!

Day, marked unblest to prove!

O that my life were past,

Or else my hapless love.

Bright star, whose light I lose,—

O, fatal memory!

My grief each thought renews!—

We meet again, or die!

Parting, etc.

O, share and bless the crown

By valor given to me!

War made the prize my own,

My love awards it thee!

Parting, etc.

Let all my trumpets swell,

And every echo round

The words of my farewell

Repeat with mournful sound!

Parting, etc.
