Silent Ones

Frances Shaw

I LIKE silent people.

I like to hear them speak,

Because their voices come from the silences

Of their own souls.

I seem to hear the sound

Of windless forests

And of still waters,

Which wrapt the earth before the day of man.

They know not, however, what they speak;

But I, who dwell in the roar of many streets—

I who listen, hear.
