Prisoner at Work in a Turkish GardenD. H. Lawrence
From “War Films”
Appeal from the garden:
Over the fountain and the orange-trees
The evening shadow has sunk,
Bringing night once more, and the man with the keys
That shut me up in my bunk.
Listen, for I will explain!
Bitter to me is this evening hour;
Each evening, bitter again.
Sisters, I am sorry for this foreign man
Who labors all day in the sun.
Sisters, the search-light’s swinging fan
In heaven has begun.
For pity of thee.
Sisters, the guns are speaking; let all
Sing soothingly.
