St. Erasmus, or Elme, Bishop and Martyr
|
HE is said to have been a native of Antioch, and a bishop in some part of Syria; who, in the persecution, hid himself on Mount Libanus, where he led an eremitical life for seventeen years, often visiting his flock, till he was crowned with martyrdom, probably in the persecution of Licinius, which had been begun by Dioclesian. He is named in the Roman Sclavonian or Muscovite, and other calendars. 1 | 1 |

Note 1. This saint is not to be confounded with St. Erasmus, M. called also Elmo or Ermo, who is honoured on the 2nd of June; and whose acts in Latin and Greek are of little authority. See Jos. Assemani, &c. [back] |
