Tomás de Iriarte (1750–1791)
Iriarte, Tomás de (ē-rē-är’tā). A Spanish poet and dramatist; born at Orotava, island of Teneriffe, 1750; died in Madrid, 1791. His chief works are an excellent didactic poem, ‘Music’ (1780); and ‘Literary Fables’ (1782), considered the best fables in the Spanish language. He also wrote the first regular comedies in Spanish, the best being ‘The Spoiled Child’ and ‘The Ill-Bred Young Lady’; besides publishing Spanish translations of French plays and some of the Latin poets.
