Samuel Gotthold Lange (1711–1781)

Lange, Samuel Gotthold (läng’ė). A German poet; born at Halle, 1711; died at Laublingen, June 25, 1781. He wrote a series of ‘Horatian Odes’ (1747) in praise of Frederick the Great, and a metrical translation of ‘The Odes of Horace’ (1752), which found a severe critic in Lessing; and published a ‘Collection of Letters from Scholars and Friends’ (2 vols., 1769–70), which is of considerable value for the literary history of the time.
