Leone Battista Alberti (1404–1472)
Alberti, Leone Battista (äl-ber’tē). An eminent Italian architect, philosopher, writer on art, and poet; born in Venice, Feb. 18, 1404; died in Rome, April 1472. He excelled simultaneously in Latin comedy with his ‘Philodoxios,’ long accepted as an ancient classic, in criticism with his ‘On Painting,’ in architectural theory with his ‘Building Art,’ and in theology and law with his interesting and sensible essays; moreover, he painted well, designed and built many noble structures, and penned some of the most delightful Latin and Italian poetry in the fifteenth-century anthology.
