Lambeck Peter (1628–1680)

Lambecius, called Peter Lambeck (lam-bē’shus). A German scholar (1628–80). He was teacher of history in the high-school of his native city, Hamburg, from 1652 to 1660, when he became its rector. He then became superintendent of the Imperial Library, Vienna. His principal writings are: ‘Introduction to Literary History’ (1659), the first methodical work of the kind; ‘Notes on the Imperial Library’ (8 vols., 1665–79), a work of great value for early German language and literature.
